2024 re-read:
This is "Kendall Jenner stopping a protest with a Pepsi" in the form of a book.

I sounded so pretentious in 2021 BUT I stand by my rating. The first half was at a solid 3 stars but the second half tanked. Solving a world shattering political event with a riddle is the dumbest thing ever. That's like North Korea agreeing to a game of Rock Paper Scissors to determine if they should give up nuclear weapons. No one would ever offer up this as an option. That's just lazy writing.

The villians are down right goofy. Oh no they believe in murdering people and keeping slaves and torture and forced labour and all things evil. 💥😡🤬👿💥👎⚡🚫⛔☢️☣️⁉️‼️❓❌❌🈲🆘㊙️

But I believe in equality and kindness and love and freedom and human rights and feminism and ART (Did you know I love to paint? :P). 😍💕♥️💋💖☺️✌️🥳❤️💏✔️🌈👩‍❤️‍👩👩‍❤️‍👨👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨💞😻💌🎨🖌️🖼️

The best villains are the ones who make you pause and think "wait they might have a point". I actually lost brain cells reading the second half of this book.

I also wish this book had gone through one more round of editing. Throne of Glass had the never ending barrage of exclamation marks and ellipses, this book was littered with emdashes. WHY.

I appreciate that this is THE BLUEPRINT for all modern romantasy books but man is this book rough.

(I still believe in Universal Basic Income. That hasn't changed. But I am slightly less pretentious about it).

Original 2021 review:
I'm really glad I listened to this on audiobook because this story is such a brainless escape. My main problem with the story is that it's very basic. There isn't a lot of tension or intrigue. Everything ends up being so convenient. My favourite part about this story ends up being an argument for universal basic income. Feyre starts off really poor. And when she suddenly did not have to worry about where her next meal will come from, she had the freedom to explore her hobbies and interests. She became happier and more relaxed. Her true potential was only realized not because she met a guy; it was because he met a sugar daddy who could support her. I couldn't stop thinking about how money can't buy you happiness. But sure can buy comfort.

I'm still going to listen to book two though. I was promised some spice but this first book was really bland. Hoping for more 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ in book two.

Listening to this on audiobook while I do brainless chores was the right call."
