Yeah, this is terrible. May-not-finish-reading terrible. All the reasons why are summed up pretty well here. I grew up in the eighties, I lived in California, I love true crime stories, and the idea of focusing on the detective's family rather than the killer is great -- but the book is so badly written, it's nearly unreadable. This is when preordering an ebook feels like being a sucker. I should have waited and read the first chapter, and then I wouldn't have wasted my money.

For me, reading samples is no good anyway because I feel compelled to finish what I started. But I actually enjoyed this book - it was different compared to a lot of the same old stories that are out there these days.
I agree, very poorly written. The author takes forever and constantly repeats the never ending details. I try to always finish a book but this is taking a long time.
Did you finish it? I read it because I am a Mill Valley native and was curious about a book set there. It was truly awful, and the rescue of the main character by her half sister was completely ridiculous. I also started laughing every time she mentioned Marin Joe's. Beyond repetitive. A bad book. (I got it at the library, no worries about paying for it.)
I re-posted the link and you're exactly right--the way Levin describes it is exactly how it is, it feels like a trial run for the movie version. Blah.
I'm half way through and if I have to hear her talk for two chapters about her period in great detail, I'm going to hunt the author down, demand my money back and suggest she find a new line of work. I am incredibly picky when it comes to new authors and once I've been burned, I won't return.
I'm so glad I saw this review! It showed up in my Book Bub for $1.99 but after reading this I'm not buying!
I'm always appreciative of reviews that are in-depth enough so as not to spoil the book yet still give me the gist of it....and save me from wasting time. Thank you to those who selflessly took one for the team and posted reviews/comments; the hours you've saved me( &$), I will cherish. ;)
I'm still aghast at some of these comments. Suggesting that Joyce Maynard find another line of work? I have read and liked all of her books, but I thought this one was the best, better than "To Die For" and "Labor Day," both of which were made into successful movies. It's just odd how people respond to things differently.
Reading this thread, I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who finds this book infuriating. The first fifty pages were pretty dreadful and things haven't gotten much better. There's nothing left for the reader to determine or guess, it's all laid out. As for her period? Please. Stop. Every chapter! Seriously.
