An excellent detective novel. Macdonald was one of the best modern American writers.

Greg Timothy, I agree, MacDonald is a great writer. And I'd never read him till last year, I didn't know there was a "Ross", but I was very familiar with "John D.". But I rea Ross's "The Way Some People Die" last year, and I realized that it's MacDonald who really did raise the noir/hard-boiled genre to its zenith.
