Wow this really took me a minute to get into! For context, I read this third- I can’t imagine I would have gotten into the series if I had read this first, but I also didn’t particularly enjoy taking myself out of the main storyline and reading it third. I honestly don’t think it matters that much when you read this (maybe I’ll change my mind who’s to say), just do whatever makes the most sense to you! I struggled through the first two novellas, and felt like Celaena was a completely different character than the one I had come to know. Things definitely started picking up in the Red Desert, and the final novella was completely devastating and made the journey worth it. Ready and excited to get back into the present day action!

I read this after heir of fire and I’m so glad I did… makes more sense having read it right before queen of shadows!
Brooke, you will be so glad you read it once you get further into the series. By Queen of Shadows, everything is incredible, and you’ll be even more obsessed with SJM.
I thought this book was such a waste of time when I read it, but as I’ve completed the next few books it’s been really important!! And now I have a greater appreciation for it
The characters and storyline in AB are so important for books 5&6, just wait! Heir of fire was one of my favorites and will definitely get you back in the mood to devour the rest of the series
This book is literally the foundation of TOG… I constantly come back to it when thinking of the series
I had the complete opposite experience! I really enjoyed the first three novellas, but as I got closer to the end I was kinda bored and wanting things to hurry up because I knew where it was all headed thanks to already reading ToG and CoM.
Best to read right before QoS imo. Bc of the similar setting and overlapping characters. There isn’t a major connection between this story and HoF, so it really takes you out of the plot! I disagree w SJM on this one lol.
I read it 4th and i wish i read it 3rd because going from HoF to AB was a bit of jump cuz imo that’s when the story STARTS so you’ll definitely appreciate this book further into the series. HAVE FUN!!!
i read it first and preferred it that way because everything comes full circle. it did take me until the last 100 pages to really get into though
Okay I just finished TOG and it was only reading it I appreciated reading AB first. I couldn’t get into AB, but I’m glad I had that background info while reading TOG.
You have officially crossed over into life changing territory for the rest of the books in the series. Godspeed 🫡
I read it first and struggled!! Everyone says this is an amazing series so I pushed through it. Def parts I liked but very hard to get into in my opinion. I also just didn’t really like Celeanas character! There were moments where I think, okay she’s growing. This is getting better and then there are flashes of her old self.
I read it 4th but wish I had read it 3rd as I was missing Rowan :( It was nice to finally unravel the mystery. I think the whole allure surrounding who Sam was and what happened to him made the first two books even more interesting.
I read this fourth and I agree. If I’d read this first I wouldn’t have continued with the series. But reading it after heir of fire made for an interesting read.
Exactly how I felt! It took me so long to read this one because I was mad that I was being taken away from the main storyline. I was told to read this third. I love Celaena because she's a bad ass assassin but SJM does such a great job in reminding us that Celaena is still only 17 years old. I'm like, "girl, you didn't see that coming?!" And remember she's a teenager - ha!
