it was amazing
bookshelves: fantasy, tear-jerker, adventure

Don't read this in public. Cried buckets. Never knew Tolkien wrote tearjerkers!! I read it while listening to Dumbledore's Farewell which didn't help matters. An epic read, rated this higher than The Fellowship of the Ring
description
Story/plot: 5* there were times I was going to score this book way lower ((view spoiler) but then the storyline redeemed itself because the greater message of valiance and the greater good outweighed the tragic events.
description
Atmosphere: 5* even more dramatic than LoTR. A Greek tragedy of epic proportions.
description
Fantasy/Worldbuilding: 5* set in the First Age of Middle Earth, the characters are bigger and mightier than the The Third Age, which is when LoTR was set.

Action/Fight scenes: 5* had me hooked.

Characters: 5* there were times i felt like hitting them but their weaknesses were also their strengths.

Morgoth aka Melkor aka Dark Lord, Black Foe of the World, etc, belonging to the race of Valar, resembles the biblical Luicifer/Satan. He falls from glory after disrupting the Music of the Ainur and defying Ilúvatar. He's bigger and more powerful than Sauron who was one of his generals. Corrupted the Maiar to create Balrogs (those fiery creatures) and bred dragons.

Túrin, belonging to the race of man, he adopts many names and titles including Turambar. Very stubborn, way too much pride, but also courageous and principled.
description
Húrin Thalion, belonging to the race of man, the last Lord of Dor-lómin. His children (Túrin, Urwen, and Nienor) were cursed by Morgoth.

"I am the Elder King: Melkor, first and mightiest of the Valar, who was before the world, and made it. The shadow of my purpose lies upon Arda, and all that is in it bends slowly and surely to my will. But upon all whom you love my thought shall weigh as a cloud of Doom, and it shall bring them down into darkness and despair. Wherever they go, evil shall arise. Whenever they speak, their words shall bring ill counsel. Whatsoever they do shall turn against them. They shall die without hope, cursing both life and death."
—Morgoth to Húrin

Morwen aka Eledhwen (because she resembled an elf), belonging to the race of man, was Húrin's wife and mother to Túrin, Urwen, and Nienor. Her pride is mentioned more than once. It's what lets her down but what also keeps her going. Túrin inherits much of her looks and character.
description

Thingol aka Elu, King of Doriath, an Elf and foster father to Túrin.
description
Melian a Maia (powerful spirits, the corrupted versions being the Balrogs) was the wife of Elu Thingol, mother of Lúthien Tinúviel, and Queen of Doriath. She is powerful enough that Morgoth is weary of her and can't penetrate the protective shield (Girdle of Melian) that she cast over Doriath.

Beleg Cúthalion, my favourite character, a Sindar/Grey Elf of Telerin who inhabited Beleriand. He goes above and beyond for Túrin, which leads to his doom.

Mablung, along with Beleg, an elf who was one of the great captains of the Sindar.
