The Colorado Kid (Hard Case Crime, 013-I)

Slight but mighty. An exercise in turning the page on the story that haunted him for most of his life. You can almost feel King trying not to mention the tower in these pages, and that shift in attention feels as melancholy as it does alleviating. I appreciate the unwillingness to rest on his laurels emanate from this story. I love it when King takes our world and moves it slightly off kilter to bring forward something familiar yet vaguely supernatural. That’s where this story excels.
Character I Loved & Hated
Stephanie of course. I love her persistence as she pushes through the razzing and slightly ritualistic passing of the guard. Her detective-like eye for detail and ability to see things that others don’t sure feels a lot like a precursor for Holly
There weren’t many characters in this book, and I found something to love in all of them.
Themes
This was pretty straight-up mystery, so it wasn’t packed with thematic richness. Proving oneself as an up-and-comer stands out, as does pursuit of the elusive.
One Thing I’ll walk away with
A hunger for fish and chips. Less so for steak
