How clear it is to me the gusto and zeal Talbot discusses the pop-up health clinic the hippie’s organized in the Haight,,, and yet when it comes to HIV, the city is rallying around Feinstein’s highly effective policies? Yeah I know that’s not right

Well y’all, the quest for a truly good San Francisco history book continues! After I DNF a few, I was really eager to give this one a try. The writing is splendid, and Talbot’s recounting of the fallout from the Summer of Love and the Jonestown Massacre are probably where he shines most. Actually, this is the best one I’ve tried yet, but it still really falls short for me in many important ways.

I think what I’m really looking for is a more thorough people’s history of the city. And hopefully one written by someone who is queer or lived through the worst of the HIV years if it touches on that…

I will commend the writing and the ability to make these influential figures come to life and at the same time bemoan the narrow scope that does not do this city justice ✌🏻
