Oh, where to start. What a journey this book was! Buckle up, this review is about to be a long one.

Bone Island is… unlike any story you’ve read before. This book is just like the sea. There are chapters where the tide puts you under. There are chapters where its hypnotizing movements put you at peace. There are chapters were it leaves you stranded on the beach, a bit lost and unsure.

Adora was unexpected and unconventional. Where Fallon was considerate and sensitive, Adora appeared as hardness personified and cold. She intruiged me. Page after page, she proved violence and sensitivity could coexist within her. I didn’t always understand her but at the same time, I wanted to remain in her unstable, unhinged head. She was fascinating, I think that’s the perfect word. Her goals, the background plot with her mom, the arranged marriage, her love for her sisters… I was extremely invested. Her character’s development was great.

Stone… I was a bit scared at the beginning, because for the first half of the book, besides the few chapters about his past, you only get to know him through the Adora spectrum. He didn’t really act or talk like someone who had lived 24 years in another century and amongst tribes, and he was pretty experimented and good at many things he supposedly had never done before.

In all honesty, it took me a while to connect with AdoraStone as lovers. I think the very first scene of them letting go and getting lost in each other happened rather early in the book and was actually quite violent emotionally and physically. It threw me off because I was expecting more buildup, more longing and connection before moving to the physical. I’m thankful for the TWs because even with them, I’ll admit some scenes caught me off guard! For these reasons, I was less invested in the romance itself than in the other plotlines.

All in all, the first half of the book precisely revolving mostly around AdoraStone had me a bit underwhelmed. It really started to scare me because I wanted to love this book SO BAD.
But I just should have trusted the process and blindly trust Nicole’s talent.

BECAUSE, the second half of the book suddenly brings in more stakes, angst, information and new relationships dynamic. Shit REALLY hits the fan at times. I was losing my entire mind.
Stone slowly connecting with the other Heathens, with Ocean, had me in SHAMBLES. In the end, his story with Adora got more to me once other people were involved and not just the two of them in a sort of ‘in camera’ setting. A romantic in public and a freak in the sheets!

Those very last chapters broke me apart and put me back together. By the time I reached the afterword I was just crying. Special mention to Cyrus, selfless king. To Ivy, no fucking words.

Before wrapping up this review, I have to mention Nicole’s absolutely unique writing style. I’m in awe of her. Diving back into her worldbuilding was SO satisfying. Rich and full of imagery, feelings pouring from the pages. The town of Weeping Hollow is still one of my favorite settings ever. The atmosphere, the characters, the covens, the fucked up and toxic and real relationships, the hardships and the love… Nicole has the power of mesmerizing you through words, for real. Like the town of Weeping Hollow, once you start her books, they won’t let you go!

Extremely thankful I got to read an ARC of this book, and terribly sorry it took me so long! Sometimes I wish I had a lighthouse to go to in order to escape life as well.

I’ll be tuned in for whenever book 3 comes out, I’m already READY! (And not to be dramatic but if it isnt Phoenix and Fable I’ll end myself).

Solid 4 stars!
