A Study in Scarlet (Sherlock Holmes, #1)

Well, I re-read this one and liked it basically out of loyalty: it's a classic, and the introduction to Sherlock Holmes. But as a mystery it is a disappointment. Holmes is of course famous for not explaining what he's seeing and thinking but that is carried out to an extreme here: for example, at one point he sends a telegram. That's all we know, we don't know to whom and until the very end we don't know that he got important information about where his suspect had traveled to. I mean, really, just not fair to the reader (or to Watson, for that matter) throughout.
