The Uninhabited House

This was super readable and fast paced for a Victorian novel (or novella? It’s hard to tell when you’re reading a free ebook), with well-drawn characters, apart from the sappy love interest, and a focus on office work that isn’t really common among the Victorian women novelists I read (understandably, since they were excluded from it). I liked the atmosphere, and the almost detective-story investigation of the haunting, and the ending, if not entirely convincing, was sufficiently effective. I will definitely look for some more Charlotte Riddell.
