The Hunting Party

“The Hunting Party” by Lucy Foley starts out pretty good but unfortunately, doesn’t maintain the momentum to make this into a memorable read. I did enjoy Foley’s unique way of describing where everything takes place and having those natural, real-life situations when traveling with a large group of friends to celebrate an event. In this case, celebrating New Year’s Eve in an area that has a ton of snow, wildlife, and gives guests the simpler things in life to enjoy with those they love.
As a mystery novel, I felt things went the safe route and didn’t give me a good, crazy, or even thrilling ride when it comes to a murder that happens during their time there. I was hoping to see different layers to each character to see how things would unfold but there wasn’t much depth to the situations that came and how things were eventually solved.
There was way too much fluff as I was waiting for a huge reveal, a crazy plot twist, something, anything, and it just didn’t deliver. I felt “The Hunting Party” tried to do too much and it fell flat, with the reveal being lame and a backstory that just wasn’t all that exciting to read as to why things happened the way that they did. I was expecting a lot more in the grand scheme of things.
I give “The Hunting Party” by Lucy Foley a 2/5 as I did enjoy the overall writing, some of the characters (Katie, Miranda, and Doug) as well as the way the chapters gave a different look at events that transpired through the eyes of those that were there as it happened. The ending was lame and after a decent start to this novel that set up a pretty good atmosphere, it dragged on at various parts that didn’t really add any kind of value for a novel like this. This wasn’t a terrible read but it’s not anything I’ll remember in the future.

I'm looking for another read by her. I loved The Paris Apartment, The Guest List was ok. Thanks for warning off this one!
@Leeanne: Thanks, my friend! Yeah, it was good at first and very intriguing but then fizzled out with some lame reveals. LoL my ideas of who did the murder and the WHY behind it were better than what actually happened. Awe well... onto the next one!
@Anna: I heard The Guest List was pretty good but yeah, I think she missed the target with this novel. I really enjoyed learning all the different characters, the atmosphere, and the "mystery" behind it but once it was all revealed, it was very flat. I was expecting a lot more and the reveal of who did it I didn't like at all. I felt it was very safe and an afterthought but that's okay, it happens!
@Leeanne: YES! LoL I had a totally awesome idea as to who it could have been and the reasoning behind it, then the real person was revealed and I was like, common now, that's silly. There was also an unrealistic part in the ending that either was accidentally omitted or just an afterthought. It's all about the details for me... ESPECIALLY in a mystery novel!
@Maiden: Thank you for the kind words, my friend! That means so much to hear, hope all is well and that you're having a wonderful weekend :-)
@Jayson: Thank you for your comment, appreciate you reading and enjoying my review of The Hunting Party :-)

You're very welcome

@Anna: Indeed! I was waiting for this awesome, elaborate, and original twist but it was a "meh" moment for sure!
@Keli: Indeed, very disappointing but it is what it is and well, already moved on to my next novel! Thanks for the kind words about my review, it means a lot to hear, my friend :-)
@dean: It's a tough call as I know some people really enjoyed it, gave it a 3 or a 4, I didn't see any of my friends give it a perfect 5. I thought it was an okay read, nothing terrible, nothing extraordinary, but a decent read. If anything, maybe get it when it's on a big sale or something?
@Chazzie: Thanks, my friend! That means a lot to hear, I wish this one was better than what it was :-P
I haven't read this one, but I will absolutely not recommend the Guest List unless you get paid. Sorry to say so, and the Guest list is the reason I'm not going to read this one.
I did kind of like the Paris Apartment, but wish it was more engaging...theres so much of nothing and so little story.

@Anja: Oh boy and wow, thanks for your insight! LoL yeah, it is what it is, I won't be reading anything else by her unless it's something that's a masterpiece that has a TON of 5-Star reviews. I don't think she's a terrible writer or anything, this just didn't do it for me.
