Well, I am not sure what I was expecting by reading a collection of essays on Little Women, one of the books that I’ve least enjoyed, regardless of the fact it is one of the most beloved books of literature. I suppose that through these essays I was looking for a quality or detail from the March sisters that made me realized that I had missed something that made me understand more this work. Unfortunately, that was not the case, and not wanting to sound harsh, I cannot really understand or sympathize with the story of the sisters. On the other hand, and also thinking this is my personal and perhaps strong personal belief, I think I have identified a trend on modern contemporary essays that I don’t like at all. For while the essays included in this collection qualify as literary essays, where the author has the liberty to share personal background, I think sometimes things get too personal, to the level “I don’t care about this”. Revisiting a fictional character through the experience of an author how experienced a bad evening because of a gown on New York’s Upper East side tells me nothing about the book or literature itself. Sorry but not sorry.
