Corny like a Hallmark movie and probably the least subtle book I've ever read.
Update: for those butthurt about my sentence-long review I just wanted to say that as a person who also struggles with depression, this book will become my 13th reason if y'all keep trying to defend it to me (jk)

one of the first books I read this year, and it's still one of the best ones

It's not supposed to be very subtle though. Matt Haig has written also non-fiction about his depression and anxiety, and I think he said in an interview that this book was trying to condense his experience in a more fictional form. It's supposed to be a book that provides hope to those who are experiencing depression and s*icidal thoughts.
@E I have read Haig's nonfiction and am already aware of those things. I promise it's okay for a random person on the internet to not enjoy this book
i read it and while i love the concept of the library in and of itself, the execution was not it. the ending left a bad taste in my mouth as well.
I am so glad you agree – everyone seems to be raving over this book and I just don’t get it. I feel like the point was made pretty early on and from then on it was just repeating itself, hammering home the lesson way too hard. A novel that could have been a short story.
Finally someone else who agrees! I gave this book two stars as well- it felt horribly predictable and repetitive. In my opinion, the concept was intruiging but the story itself was not.
I liked the idea and rated it high because I related to a lot of themes (found myself tearing up a lot because I just *felt* what she was going through) and the idea was there, but I agree that the ending was corny. There was something about the execution that was a little off… Can’t put my finger on it. Maybe the character was like a projection, a stencil, rather than an individually developed character. It has stuck with me though.
Felt the same way. It was boring and corny but the message was powerful. I gave it a four since i cant give a 3.6 rating here lol.
@Cindy I was not saying it's not ok for you to dislike it. Just wanted to point out that maybe the main message and purpose of the book wasn't to be a subtle, super nuanced tale, but rather to deliver a powerful message as clearly as possible. That being said, it's perfectly fine that people don't like the book or appreciate the intent but not how the message was delivered by Haig.
thank you! YES! i think if you read it in a light way and not thinking this is life changing or anything you can enjoy it but starting it wirh the mind its the such a deep book as everyone says is not doing it any justice
Agree, now I don't feel alone. I thought I was going to learn about philosophy, or enjoy a nice adventure, cool quotes from other books raised the star rating for me.
As a depressed bitch, I can confirm that depression is not just about regrets and not having second chances, so the whole message of this book to me felt extremely shallow and surface level. If the author really wanted to give comfort to people struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts, he should not have simplified the disorder down to just being regretful over our life choices. And the ending was just… nope, not another you wake up from a traumatic event and every suddenly and magically is okay now because the author says so. I gave it 2 stars as well.
I don't understand all the hype there is for this book. It is overly predictable and yeah comes off like a bad movie.
Happy to see in the comments section I’m not the only one that didn’t like this one 😅 anxious people should have won the Goodreads award
Most repetitive and predictable book Ive ever read 😅 gave it three stars because the message was nice
I’m so glad you agree. Themes Felt so base level for me as someone who also suffers with mental health issues. I know everyone’s approach is different but it felt as though the theme of this was “just stop being sad uwu”
Hard agree. My issues stem from the framing of severe late-stage depression being "solved" by misogynistic "perspective." If this was a book framed on the more common "dissatisfaction with life" and a subsequent drug trip, then I would have been more inclined to forgive its cheesiness.
Ohhh! I wanted to read it only for the hype but… I have always trust you with this books so… might skip then
I love that this is either a love it or hate it book. Like I thought it was a nice break from what I usually read and felt like a good time to be sentimental and introspective, but the bad reviews are extremely understandable! Definitely can feel repetitive and basic or really sad and refreshing.
@E I know the story wasn't supposed to be subtle and am fully aware of what he was attempting to do with this book... because he wasn't subtle about it lol
I haven't read it yet--but it seems a bit to me like a primer, if you haven't been exposed to the ideas, maybe it could be helpful. Then again, I may be sorely disappointed.
