Remind me next time I'm looking for a new book NOT to buy one that is advertised on perezhilton.com! I should have known what I'd be getting myself into...
This was totally a summer beach read - although next time, I will wait for paperback (too heavy)! I felt like it was just ALL dialogue ALL the time - the author never went into too much detail in her description of places, people, etc (this reminds me of my high school English teachers constantly telling us to "show, not tell" in our writing). Overall, my opinion of it while reading it was "meh" - I was happy to pick it up when I had free time to read, but I wasn't drawn to it, by any means.
Also, the pharaoh was a total douchebag, to the point where his douchebaggery seemed way too over-the-top. Nefertiti was pretty obnoxious, as well, and in the same unrealistic, "overacted" way. Now that I think about it, MOST of the characters were not likeable or even remotely three-dimensional to me. This just made the book feel schlocky and dumb.

Books aren't made for you to like every character. Base you're judgement on the book and the story not the characters personalities they are what make the story.

Kellyb is right. Not every book that an author writes will be liked by everyone. Sometimes there are characters were you are not going to like as much as other people do. You shouldn't really read reviews but should base your own judgement around the story. If you hate the story then that's fine too....not everyone is going to agree...
The intense detail of this novel was what I loved about Nefertiti.
Yes Anna I think I agree with you about it being a "summer read." I read Heretic Queen first ( and liked it for what it was) then got this. A bit disappointing. Try Michelle Moran's Daughter of Cleopatra- different civilization, nice reading. But still kind of character depleted.
What an Unlikable little (rhymes w/ witch) Nefertiti came across as in this book. That, & her sister was (of course)a Saint. Dull, Uninspired writing. I know there's a good book about this supposedly Fascinating woman out there but it isn't this one..
You should read Libbie Hawker's books. Much better.
I agree with Kelly to an extent it's true that books aren't made for you to like every character but nevertheless this is historical fiction and not just fiction and it should try as much as possible to stay true to the real people who lived in that period. The author had many instances where she made Nefertiti into a sort of selfish person, yet history describes her as a "people's queen". It seemed as if the author had a genuine dislike for Nefertiti as she repeatedly stressed upon the supposed regret of Nefertiti's mother-in-law that she had chosen her as queen. But the novel, being historical fiction the author should have never put in her own opinions or emotions of the characters into the book.
Generally, it was an okay book, but that's it. It was just okay and not worth all the hype
