really liked it
bookshelves: sci-fi, short-story

This was an exciting story despite a few discrepancies (the main character's hair is described as ash-blond, and then red), and a few typos (indie publishers aren't as thorough with their spell check as major publishers are).

It's a unique story about first contact. Humanity's remnants have been sailing through space for hundreds of years, looking for a new Earth. They crash land on one, only to quickly discover a new and deadly species already inhabits the planet: the Chroin. Laure, the main character, accidentally becomes psychically linked with one of the Chroin and physically changes herself and the alien. She is met with hostility from her own people, while trying to explain what happened to her, which isn't helpful, because she doesn't understand, either. Laure and her new Chroin friend must prove themselves by protecting the survivors of the human race from the other Chroin.

As much as I liked the action scenes, and the lack of acceptance of Laure by the crew is timely, I really wanted to know more about the Chroin, and the connection one of them made with Laure. Why did it change them? How did it happen? How can Laure's new bond help humanity survive on this new planet? I hope I will find out in the next book of the series, which I will definitely be reading, because I have to find out what happens next!
