it was ok

normally, a 300 page book would only take a few hours for me to read. this took me nearly two weeks to finish. i just could not get into the story. i wanted to DNF is several times, but the glowing reviews/ratings made me push through it.

i cant pinpoint anything specific that made me struggle with this. the premise is interesting, the commentary on native american culture is eye-opening, and the characters are likeable. perhaps its the writing style? i just couldnt go more than 5 sentences without my eyes starting to glaze over. my attention was never fully grabbed and it felt like i had to constantly work at trying to understand what was going on.

so, this just wasnt for me personally. but based on how many positive reviews this has received, i still feel like i could recommend this to horror fans.

Laura I'm impressed you can read 300 in a few hours! haha - I saw this book in a bookshop the other day and hesitated. I guess you helped me make a decision ;)

jessica arini - i would be SOOOO confused if i had listened to this on audio. especially towards the middle/end when the POV shifts. so dont worry - its not you!

laura - yeah, i can read around 100 pages/hour if its a book that doesnt require too much thinking and the writing is pretty simple (which is the majority of what i read lol). but if you hesitated, then i think you made the right choice with this one!

Susy Oh dear, I’m supposed to read this for a GR group! Ugh.

jessica hopefully you enjoy it more than i did!

Drea I agree. I've been struggling to understand how it even passed with being called a "horror" novel... Some reviews I've read have called it terrifying and I just don't get it..

Drea I feel like I might've been able to enjoy it more if I wasn't expecting horror, because the writing was decent and it made me chuckle a couple times... I just kept waiting to be scared, and never really was

Jordan Saranpaa I had the same experience! I really liked the story, but the writing style was not for me and made it really drag on. I hate forcing myself to read something I’m not into, makes it even more unenjoyable.

message 8: by Ada (new)

Ada Angharad I feel the same. It is my third attempt, since it has so good ratings and buzz, but somehow, I just can't get into it.

Irenic Another Reviewer commented that she found it to be more literary and less horror, and I have to agree. Not that I'm anti-literature, but this one is def. not my cup of tea.

message 10: by Dave (new) - rated it 3 stars

Dave I slogged through the last 75% of this book. Definitely caught my attention at first but then quickly shifted. The part with the basketball game at the end was so much longer than necessary.

Vicki Herbert I've read a ton of Indian stories and even more horror and this story wasn't the best of either genre for me. I made myself finish the book because of the price and positive hype but for me it just didn't make the grade...

message 12: by Ben (new) - rated it 2 stars

Ben Felt exactly the same way.

🥀 Rose 🥀 I’m not sure I’m even gonna finish it.
I’m slogging bad in this one

message 14: by Martini (new)

Martini Dozier I couldn't finish this one. I found it really boring.. maybe I'll give it a go again at some point..

Kevin Donohue It was so nonsensical with crazy people doing outlandish things with their loony ideas described in every minute detail I didn't even try to understand it and buzzed right through
.

I gave it a higher rating but I understand your review completely. This book takes work. It is, at points, confusing, disjointed and muddled but I found it ultimately worth it. Maybe because it fulfills my "Animals get to shoot back" hunting fantasy.

Michelle I'm really close to putting it down. Your review is exactly how I'm feeling. I'm really bored and often can't figure out what is going on or what the point is

Jaz The writing style is definitely a huge struggle. The narrator’s syntax is bizarre and the slang is difficult, too. I am 30% done and also tempted to DNF. Should have checked your review out before I started!

Gordon Allred I felt the same way. Excellent review. Disappointed in this book. I didn't finish it. After a few sentences my eyes kept glazing over. It was hard to follow.

Eduardo Ceja While i did have a 4 star review, I totally understand exactly what you mean about this " felt like i had to constantly work at trying to understand what was going on." I think most reviews have similar sentiment.

bailey this review is exactly how I felt upon finishing. took the words out of my mouth

Kelsey Bohl This is exactly how I feel.

Krystle Santana whta is dnf?

message 26: by Sara (new) - rated it 1 star

Sara Nadile My exact thoughts, I really had a hard time following.. anything. I found myself trying to skip paragraphs only a few chapters in. So disappointed because this book was highly recommended to me and I was excited to read!

Brian Same. Can’t get into the writing style, it’s just difficult to follow. Makes reading this such a slog.

Rebecca Hutchins I 100% agree. Unfortunately, I HAD to quit about 50% through. After WEEKS of plodding through, I just couldn't waste any more time. It was so disjointed and SLOW.

message 29: by MJ (new)

MJ Jozaitis I have felt so bad that I can’t get through this book…I’ve put it down and read others just to see if I come back to it I’ll somehow start liking it. I just finished My Heart is a Chainsaw and almost didn’t make it through. I guess this author just isn’t for me. So thank you all for making me feel less alone with this struggle!

message 30: by Carla (new)

Carla Johnson the way the sentences are formed is just kinda hard for me to read???? idk how to describe it

message 31: by Areum ☆ (new)

Areum ☆ LOL i see your reviews all the time and i always wanna ask what boc do you like cause i rarely see you rate any high?

Ashley Yes! Gosh in this book I felt like I found myself rereading pages to understand what was happening too many times. I wanted to stop reading it, but somehow I made it! Though, very displeased.

message 33: by Mika (new) - rated it 2 stars

Mika I hate that I can’t get into it. I’ll read a chapter and stop. The sentencing structure is driving me mad haha

message 34: by Nicole (new) - added it

Nicole Blank I just started reading this book, and I'm really struggling to understand what's going on. Is it worth struggling through, or should I give up?? I swear I had to read each sentence atheist twice to understand

Shawnna S. I’m experiencing this right now. I’m glad I’m not crazy. I keep having to re-read sentences to understand what is happening. I really want to be able to get through this book, but it sounds like this writing style just might not be for me.

message 36: by David (new)

David The prose made me put the book down and just read a synopsis

Nikki Williams So glad to be validated by people with similar issues. There was something about the writing style that just didn’t flow for me. I found myself rereading and rereading and just never got into it.

Kristen Yun I’m 20% into the book, and I’m putting it down and moving on. These comments are so validating! I just want to enjoy the story, not decipher sentences one by one.
