"At the end of book three Roland and his followers finally escaped the terrors of Lud and Blaine the train and set their eyes, once again, on following the beam to the Dark Tower. I rated book three a five star rating as it was my favourite up until then.

Wizard and Glass gets a four star rating from me. Again an excellent and exciting piece of the Dark Tower series but it interrupted the journey in a major way, just when it REALLY started to jump forward. For those of you that are about to start this book, do not panic. again it is a fantastic read. You will know to this point how many times Roland has put off speaking about his passed to his companions, how many times they have asked him for his story and how many times he has withdrawn into hi
mself, promising that one day he will tell.

In the Wizard and Glass that day has come. We start the book at the exact point where the wastelands ended but finally Eddie, Susannah and Jake (Oy too) convince Roland to talk about his early years and the dark times that he survived. 95% of this novel is Roland's version of events. Not only does this fill the massive hole of how Roland came to be in pursuit of the Dark Tower, it is also a bloodthirsty story of his arrival as a true Gunslinger. An epic story in itself, Roland lays bare his youthful experiences as the world he knows begins to move on.

It is obvious that Roland has a long held secret that drives him forward but is a source of melancholy in his life. This back story explains everything - we are introduced to characters that may well pop up again in the series and some that do later in the book as we return to present day. He tells of his parents and friends and outlines the major conflict in his wo
rld that is the grounding for the world that he and his companions are in now.

Again there are the obvious links King has to some of his other books but it is the arrival of Randall Flagg that will get a true King fan up and about. As they are hardly spoilers to this story I will mention two others - Abigail Freemantle and Captain Trips. Ring any bells?"
