really liked it
bookshelves: audible, betrayal, loyalty, murder, mystery, survival

This is the first stand alone Rhys Bowen story I have read outside of her wonderful series, Her Royal Spyness. I enjoyed the historical fiction in this cloak and dagger mystery, but missed the humor and witty banter of her series.

Paula K Nice to read stand alones for authors you typically just do the series. Glad you enjoyed, Susan!

How’s the weather been in Texas? Today is the first cool day we have had in months here in Massachusetts!

✨Susan✨ It is miserable here. The heat plus the humidity makes it hard to breath outside. Argh. The bad part is that there is no end in sight. Enjoy your cool days for me😎

C. (Comment, never msg). Ladies, across Canada has been +30 C until recently too. That is fine, as long as we get enough rain. Prayers for animals, people, and homes near wildfires in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario!

I didn't know Rhy Bowen has standalone novels but have recently joined the party, of those who know what a fantastic authoress she is. If you haven't tried "Murphy's Law", introducing the early 1900s New York mysteries, you must! The perception for historical feeling and what mattered at that time, is remarkable. Carolyn in Manitoba.

✨Susan✨ Thanks C. I’m going to check it out. Historical fiction in New York sounds so good.

C. (Comment, never msg). Do call me Carolyn, fellow cat Mom. :) Oh, when an authoress is this good, I call her novels "Too good to be a cozy"! Often, those are light on good, adult plotting or writing and not just content! You won't believe the historical flavour she imbues into this. Thank you for visiting my review, as well!

✨Susan✨ Thanks Carolyn. I am always excited when someone else likes books by authors I love.

C. (Comment, never msg). Me too, Susan! It shouldn't be rare but most people read crime thrillers and I prefer *mysterious* mysteries. Also, for ladies who like a protagonist who is 30-50, with all the fun and suspenseful clue-solving often overlooked for adults; our niche was seldom fulfilled! May 30+ paranormal fans unite, LOL!

✨Susan✨ A few others I like are Night of the Living Deed and Guidebook to Murder. Gals in their thirties mysteries.

C. (Comment, never msg). I should have specified, non-cozy mysteries. I appreciate paranormal, adult content but want it to be serious: standard adult mystery. Part of my complaint is that the few spirit type mysteries made for adults, are joked away as the "cozy" type. That is why Karen White's and Simone St. James's stories are so special. They are suspenseful, atmospherically mysterious "standard adult mystery"! Spirits shouldn't be chatterbox sidekicks. The experience should be respectfully awed and enchanting. :-)
