THE INSPECTERS
"It's a play on words, you see, because an inspector is a person who searches for and examines something, and a specter with an 'e' is another word for ghost, so an inspecter is a person who looks for ghosts in order to examine and inspect them.''
I was expecting more creepiness from this book but this is a middle grade, maybe that was the reason that I wasn't creeped out while reading this, but I have to admit it had some frightening moments, if I read this book when I was actually in middle school I'm 110% sure that I would've slept with the lights on for days.
I loved the friendship between Cassidy and Jacob and how they were twisted up together. Cassidy’s parents mean also well for their daughter and they were very passionate about their careers and the family dynamic was fun. And may I just say that I loved Jacob, he's like Casper the friendly ghost; funny, adorable, trustworthy, friendly and you know a ghost, well he can only interact with Cassidy or people like Cassidy aka in-betweeners.
I wanted to know about her friend Lara's backstory; how she died and who saved her from death, I noticed that it was mentioned unintentionally about how she died but wasn't confirmed by Lara herself and neither Cassidy wanted to know about it and I doubt Lara'll be in the second book. So, that was a minus point.
I want to see more development in Cassidy's personality in the second book, she was a little plain and would have been better to know more about Jacob and what happened to him. Hopefully that'll be explored in the second book.
Enjoyed it throughly and thoroughly. The book as a whole is an easy and fun read and great for people who love horror/paranormal but not too heavy. There was never a time, not even a single moment that I wasn't invested in this book, truly. What I love about Victoria's writing is that she makes the readers imagine the scenery in detail as if they're all real. Wonderful middle grade story of a young girl who has a ghost for a best friend and can cross the veil from the living to the dead. It's not scary, but it's wonderfully creepy and Schwab does a great job describing what it's like to cross over.
Also, this book has also given me vibes of a TV show that I used to watch ''Ghost Whisperer".

Haven't read any of Schwab's books yet but I'd like to start with this one :) It's been a long time since I read a novel that can be classified as 'horror' but I'm a bit of a scaredy-cat so I try to avoid that genre anyways. But this book seems like it won't be that bad, albeit a little creepy but I can deal with that. Great review btw, Sylvie!
