bookshelves: romance

My rating makes me really sad because I had very high hopes for this novel.

I was debating whether or not to make it a bit higher, but if I'm being honest, I did not like this as a whole.

Basically, this book is about 30-something year old Alexa and Drew who meet on a stuck hotel elevator, get to talking, and agree that Alexa will attend Drew’s ex’s wedding as his plus one that weekend. That sounded to me like a recipe for the perfect guilty pleasure romantic comedy—I would 101% get sucked into this plot if it were a movie (like I did with the book). Unfortunately, it was a no from me.

Before I get into the problematic bits, I just want to acknowledge the really good parts of this book, because they existed too:

-An interracial couple as the main characters. I didn’t know this going into it, but I was really happy about the representation; I think that’s important! Why have I not read a book about an interracial couple before?!!!! (Can someone recommend me more?)
-Luke and Brendan. They were minor characters, but they were the only gay couple in the book. Again, I felt the representation was great.
-The switching narratives between Alexa and Drew. I usually don’t like that, but this was executed well in my opinion. When Alexa’s POV switched to Drew’s, and vice versa, the story would continue where the other person’s left off and it flowed perfectly.
-Carlos, Drew’s best friend. The scenes with him were my saving grace, honestly. Drew was an awful person to him for absolutely no reason though! If I learned one thing from this book, it’s that if your ‘friend’ yells obscenities at you (multiple times) and kicks you out of their house just because you try to get them to admit they like a girl, they’re a complete nutcase and you need to not be like Carlos and run as far away from them as possible, immediately. This review should just be a petition to get Carlos his own book, he deserved way better.
-The Pensive from Harry Potter was mentioned. Yup, that made it to my ‘good things about this book’ list. Not even going to explain why.

So, if I have a long list of good things then why did I give it such a low rating?

You need to understand that I went into this thinking that it would be cute. I mean, look at that cover; it’s adorable. What I got out of this was not cute, it was annoying. The first quarter centered on their meeting in the elevator and the actual Wedding Date. Beyond that, all that happened was long-distance, fly-back-and-forth-every-other-weekend, what-even-is-our-title, neither-of-us-wants-to-bring-it-up-even-though-we-both-know-we-like-each-other, nonsense. I wanted to read about mature adults... but what I actually read was the romantic biographies of every high school girl and boy I’ve ever met-and even they sometimes aren't this immature. This book exists because both of these people made things SO COMPLICATED.

The book should have been called Groundhog Day because every time they met, it would be the same routine: one of them flies out to the other, they pick up tacos or In N Out or pizza on their way home, they have sex a million times (I swear these people don’t even KNOW each other because that’s all they are doing, they barely speak), both of them think ‘I’m scared to ask what we are’, they fly back home and wonder what they are for the whole week but don’t bring it up, and they do this over again the following weekend. Don’t even get me started about what happened when it did finally get brought up. (view spoiler)

I’ve never been this worked up by a book. I feel personally victimized by how it did a complete 180 from what I thought it was going to be.

Here are some quotes that made me cringe so much that I had to dog ear the pages to remember them:

“[Drew (through text)]: Great news! What did he say?
She made a mental note to reward him for giving her an exclamation point back.”

I just… I can’t. Reward him????? For an exclamation point???? Yikes.

“Not that she wasn’t allowed to go out when he wasn’t there, but he’d sort of pictured her sitting home on the couch missing him.”

She’s known you for a month, relax. Also, you refuse to tell her what you two are, let alone admit it to your best friend, but you still want her to sit at home moping without you?… stop.

“It was probably a real risk to pull her into the bedroom… but he was on call until six in the morning. Was he just supposed to not have sex with her tonight?”

It's literally all you've been doing, so for once, can you not? Please, for my sanity. Cause God knows it’s gone after this.

LMAO I would say read it so I have someone to yell with, but I already yelled with you so you're spared 😂

Janille Saneei I had a similar reaction this book – feeling so disappointed because I had such high expectations and things started so well! Glad to know I'm not alone. Also, your reviews are amazing – so glad I stumbled upon your profile and we became friends! :)

Me too! After the wedding, it went downhill for me. I still love the premise though; it sounds so interesting but I just wish it were executed differently!! And thank you, that means so much to me! I'm glad we became friends too <3

Sara I wanted to like this book so much but it really went downhill for me after they got together. So many sex scenes, so little communication!

Catherine Sara wrote: "I wanted to like this book so much but it really went downhill for me after they got together. So many sex scenes, so little communication!"

I agree, and they were so lackluster too- very 'fade to black' which became a little too overdone after a while. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this would have been better!

Tera Myers This review captures almost all of my exact thoughts on this book. I was so excited to read this for the diverse cast of characters. I wanted to like it.

I even held out hope that halfway through the book we readers would SURELY get an unexpected plot twist and Alexa would end up with Carlos...

You are so right, I was so worked up that I didn't say it in my review but I had that exact thought about Carlos. It was the one thing keeping me going PRAYING that he would have a falling out with Drew and Alexa would be with him instead. That was the only possible happy ending for me because their relationship was way too toxic to end in a happily ever after!!

Marlana I had the same experience with this book! Went in thinking one thing and was so disappointed.

Catherine Marlana wrote: "I had the same experience with this book! Went in thinking one thing and was so disappointed."

I was so upset by it too, not what I expected at all but it had so much potential.

Jennifer Warner I totally agree with your positives and negatives! I wanted Jennifer Crusie....I did not get it ☹️

Catherine Jennifer wrote: "I totally agree with your positives and negatives! I wanted Jennifer Crusie....I did not get it ☹️"

I know, it had some good qualities but overall it really couldn't have been more difficult to get through 😖

Andrea Van Thank you for this review- it’s good to know I’m not alone. This book was recommended on a podcast that I listen to and usually I love her recommendations. You summed up
My thoughts exactly! I felt like I was reading the same things over and over and I thought their emotions and responses were “ junior high” . There reactions and maturity did not match their professions at all. I was disappointed!

Catherine Andrea wrote: "Thank you for this review- it’s good to know I’m not alone. This book was recommended on a podcast that I listen to and usually I love her recommendations. You summed up

I'm glad I could articulate your thoughts, but I'm sorry it didn't turn out as well as you expected either! It was very 'junior high' maturity level - it almost didn't feel like these people were actual adults. So many months have passed since I read it, but I'm still so mad about how it turned out lol

Savannah I agree with all of these comments. I almost stopped reading this book because it was so boring a Drew was a possessive jerk.

Catherine Savannah wrote: "I agree with all of these comments. I almost stopped reading this book because it was so boring a Drew was a possessive jerk."

I almost stopped too! The only thing that kept me going was the fact that I bought it, and I didn't wanna feel like I wasted my money. Also, I was really rooting for it to get better because I loved the concept in theory!

Paulette Omg same!! Cringe worthy after the wedding

Jessica Poillucci THIS! I was expecting this to be one of my favorite books ever, based on reviews from friends. I hated it. I spent all 290 odd pages cringing. Also, I'm glad I am not the only one who was very grossed out by the "reward him for using an exclamation point" quote.

Catherine Reshmi wrote: "Catherine...loved your review...hated the book. Silly characters and and unimaginative plot"

Thank you so much! I completely agree with you about the characters and plot.. disappointed is an understatement for how I felt.

Denise Thank you so thought exactly the same!! I genuinely skipped through the last 50% of the book it was making me feel sick for how slow and unimaginative it was

Catherine Alicia wrote: "I had a very similar reaction, especially to your comment on, "how do these people even know each other"? The only time I felt I was getting deeper into their budding relationship was when she told..."

i know, it felt purely physical, which would be fine if that's what i expected going into it.

Denise wrote: "Thank you so thought exactly the same!! I genuinely skipped through the last 50% of the book it was making me feel sick for how slow and unimaginative it was"

me too!! i just wanted to skim, i wasn't excited to find out what was going to happen. had hopes that it would get better, but nooope

Stolie77 I listened to the audible and it was somehow worse! Add all of that and a terrible narrator. I want to cry I’m so mad.

Andrea Love and Other Words, Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating, The Unhoneymooners all by Christina Lauren. Great love stories with interracial couples as the primary couples. Also The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

THANK YOU! i really appreciate these recommendations, i have a few of them on my radar, i didn't know they featured interracial couples!!

Stolie77 wrote: "I listened to the audible and it was somehow worse! Add all of that and a terrible narrator. I want to cry I’m so mad."

noooo, i'm sorry you felt this way! i was so devastated too, don't worry, you'll read a much better book soon :)

Checer Jean Francois I enjoyed Carlos’ character as well! Carlos did end up getting his own book!! The proposal by Jasmine Guillory. Have you thought about reading it? I’m thinking about reading that next

Veronica Preach it. Thought this book would be great and was sorely disappointed. I'm greatly confused about all the positive reviews this book has received. So happy to have found a review that concurs with my own thoughts on this story.

i know, when i wrote this i could not find a review that accurately captured my thoughts. sorry you didn't enjoy it either, i hope your next read is better!

Checer Jean Francois wrote: "I enjoyed Carlos’ character as well! Carlos did end up getting his own book!! The proposal by Jasmine Guillory. Have you thought about reading it? I’m thinking about reading that next"

omg i can't believe it! he was my favourite character in the book. i never thought about reading it before because i didn't know it existed, but i would maybe give it a chance for the character alone :)

message 31: by Amber (new) - rated it 1 star

Amber I agree 100% with this review, as well as with the person who said the narrator of the audiobook was awful. I had such high hopes for some light chick lit but now I’m just angry.

Onixcia Perley you asked about an interracial couple book> i recommend
The kiss Quotient by Hellen Hoang

Daphne Christine Yesssss she was whiny and they didnt do anything but order takeout and have sex and i got tired of it. I get it "youre not like other girls..." but you kinda are and in some ways worse because you asked a question --you KNEW you might not like the answer to-- to a guy youve known for 3 weeks? And then act like a TOTAL BITCH over his response... which was a joke... like grow up alexa. You work for the government.

Catherine Amber wrote: "I agree 100% with this review, as well as with the person who said the narrator of the audiobook was awful. I had such high hopes for some light chick lit but now I’m just angry."

thankfully i didn't have to listen to the narration through audio, but i honestly contemplated whether or not that would have been less painful at the time i read it! sorry you found it wasn't any better!

Catherine Onixcia wrote: "you asked about an interracial couple book> i recommend

thank you so much, i will add that to my list! :)

Catherine Daphne wrote: "Yesssss she was whiny and they didnt do anything but order takeout and have sex and i got tired of it. I get it "youre not like other girls..." but you kinda are and in some ways worse because you ..."

LMAO literally that was the whole book! they were both soo childish about the whole situation. and i agree with you, i kept having to remind myself that she had a job in the government, she acted like she was still in high school

message 37: by Kathryn (new) - added it

Kathryn Agree. I had high expectations for this one, as its praises are sung across the internet. In reference to your cited quote - "mental note" is an overused and weak phrase that SO MANY authors use. I wish I could un-see it every time I read it.

message 38: by Luz (new) - rated it 2 stars

Luz T I agree with your review. 👍🏼

message 39: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Martin Read this review to see if I missed anything by skipping ahead and just reading "The Proposal", where I felt much of the same frustration. If you're looking for good interracial romance with GREAT banter, try Talia Hibbert. Especially her Ravenswood series.

Victoria I don’t think I have ever agreed with a review more! This book was so bad. I finished it this morning and told my husband and he said, good I don’t have to listen to you whine about this anymore. Haha! I didn’t care for either Alexa or Drew, but especially Drew! He was a jerk! And I never understood how they really knew each other because all they did was have sex. I was not rooting for them get together and I cannot stand novels where the adult characters don’t communicate. The characters are a doctor and a lawyer, they would know better. Ugh! At least it’s over now haha!

Catherine Luz wrote: "I agree with your review. 👍🏼"

thanks for reading! sorry you had a similar opinion - here's to hoping your next read is better :)

oh no, sorry that one wasn't any better! and thank you for the recommendation, i will check that out! :)

i felt the same way - i had brought this book on vacation and it was like pulling teeth trying to get through it in my down time! i was so relieved when it was over. yeah, drew was an absolute idiot and alexa was childish and naive but at least you can almost guarantee your next read will be better ahaha!!

message 44: by Shirley (new)

Shirley Ha!!! You totally nailed it. All they did was fly out to see each other, go out to eat, and have sex. I was waiting for them to change it up and maybe cook dinner for once at home....and low and behold near the end of the book she “convinced” him to make her pancakes one morning.

Amber G Giiiiirl all of the yes to your review. I also hated it. Did anyone else think that it was written on maaaaybe an 8th grade level? The writing was just too choppy for me. It didn’t flow well

Catherine Amber wrote: "Giiiiirl all of the yes to your review. I also hated it. Did anyone else think that it was written on maaaaybe an 8th grade level? The writing was just too choppy for me. It didn’t flow well"

ahah thank you but sorry you disliked it as well! yeah i agree, i remember thinking that about the writing which made it soo much harder to finish!!

I know!!! I could almost predict what was going to happen next because they kept the same old routine 🤦‍♀️ by the time he made pancakes, i didn't even care anymore

message 47: by Abra (new)

Abra Agreed 1 million percent. This book has been AGONIZING, I hate everything about both of these characters, they’re incredibly naive and terrible and I want to punch both of them.
After reading so many positive reviews, I’m so glad to know that all of you agree about how terrible this book is. Also how BADLY written it is - although I think the good things you acknowledged in your review are bang-on, (yes! Carlos needs his own story!) they’re not enough to justify reading this trash (even though I read it to the bitter, painful end).

Kimberly Hit the nail right in the head with this review!! Took me forever to read because I just wasn’t into it. Why in the heck I felt I needed to finish it... idk

Catherine Kimberly wrote: "Hit the nail right in the head with this review!! Took me forever to read because I just wasn’t into it. Why in the heck I felt I needed to finish it... idk"

Same here!! I didn't feel excited to pick it up once I realized that it was not what I had expected at all, yet I still somehow finished. To this day I do not know how I managed the strength

Agonizing is the perfect word to describe how it made me feel to read this!!! I gave it that chance to see if things were going to turn around in the end, but unfortunately enough it actually got worse 💩 Carlos was the only character she seemed to have given any rationality to.. I think he does actually have his own book now? But regardless, the writing wasn't for me so I can't even justify giving that a try!

Kelsey Wooden Super late to this party as I'm new to the contemporary romance genre. (I took a loooong hiatus because #lovesucks, but alas...I am back.) I don't know you but I'M SO GLAD YOU FELT THIS WAY BECAUSE SAME. This book had some great points to it, but the overwhelming feeling after reading this was just, ew. Drew was a narcissistic asshole and not just that but borderline abusive. (I'm pretty sure there were two "Grabbing her wrist and holding her there" moments that had me wanting to scream.) Total cringe fest and not great.
