The second installment in the Harry Bosch series, which has begun pulling more layers from this highly mysterious character, whom I met in later Connelly works with a focus on Mickey Haller. Connelly, still a newer writer at this time, paints some great images of Bosch, but has yet to rise to his true greatness.

In this book, Bosch comes upon the suidice of a fellow cop while on call over the holidays. He begins to investigate, even when told to steer clear, which gets him into some of his own hot water. Subsequent crimes and cases tied to the dead detective begin to tie in together in an odd way, leaving Bosch to wonder if there is more than meets the eye.

Connelly shows us some glimpses into Bosch's past and makes what will eventually be an interesting familial/character connection with the other famed Connelly character, Mickey Haller. Drugs, border crossing, and even some old fashioned bull fighting pepper this book. Connelly is showing us some more of the great BOSCH, but we await his full potential. I am sure, with many books to go, the character will develop and the suspense will kick up a notch as well!

Well done, Mr. Connelly. Keep it up (oh right, you have with 12 other BOSCH books)!
