Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West

A quote from the Foreword of "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee"
"...the glorious myth of the 'winning' of the West had a few cracks - and that those whooping natives who stood in the way of Progress might just be human beings."
The whites didn't "win" the American West, the Native American Indians lost it or rather had it taken away from them.
Just prior to reading this book, I read one titled "The Earth is Weeping." That book, which was excellent, by the way, told the story of the Indian Wars from the white man's perspective. "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" is an eye-opening account of the same subject but from the Native American point of view. Many actual personal accounts of events by Native American participants are strewn throughout the book. They tell of the hardship and decimation of the tribes from the Great Plains to the West and Southwest.
The author's writing is superb and there are many pictures of Indian chiefs who were major participants in the Indian Wars, approximately (1850-1890), to help give them life again. The only thing that could make this book even better would be maps to better understand the locations of the tribal lands.
Highly recommended for those interested in American Western expansion history.

Yes! Go back and get it. I just finished reading it and I'm working on a review that won't do it justice.

Great review, Jay. This book has been on my radar for many years but I just couldn’t bring myself to read it because I was certain it would be extremely sad..... I think you are right in saying the land was taken from them.

The land certainly was all but taken from them and that is truly sad. The book is one that we all should read to understand how that happened.

I still wear and cherish my t-shirt from when I participated in the Walk Across America, sponsored by the American Indian Movement (AIM), which says "We were all wounded at Wounded Knee".
