it was ok

Let me start by first apologizing to everyone who loves this classic. I don't doubt Dune was something special when it first came out in the 1960s. But reading it for the first time today, it feels horribly outdated to me and at times almost incomprehensible.

I was warned going into this story that the beginning is extremely hard to understand, but that is an understatement. I could barely follow its scene after scene of dialogue referencing people and places and events, all with no explanation or context. It literally feels like I was just dropped into the middle of a book, and everything had already been explained elsewhere.

But it gets better, right? Well, only somewhat. A narrative does take shape, but the writing style remains confusing and obscure. It manages to be both long-winded and not clear enough, if you can believe that. Certain obvious points are harped on again and again, but other crucial ones are merely glossed over. Then, when you inevitably miss those important points, they create this cascading effect that keeps you mired in confusion.

The writing is also pretentious, with regular or nonsensical things consistently being presented in a profound way. There are plenty of extraneous paragraphs that sound good until you try to discern their meaning, at which point you'd be stumped. This sort of writing really confused me because I couldn't figure out which paragraphs mattered and needed to be dissected carefully to suss out their hidden meaning, and which ones are just adornment.

As for the story itself, it was a complete mismatch with my interests. I like science fiction with lots of real science. Instead, this is a space opera (a.k.a. a soap opera that takes place in space) with no actual science. It's all political intrigue, melodrama, doublespeak, and who has power over who, which I have zero interest in. I also couldn't care less about how fawningly amazing Paul is and how he is destined to be the chosen one.

This was such a frustrating reading experience because it could've been an amazing story. And there were moments in the beginning when I thought it was going in those creative directions. I was riveted during that infamous test in the first scene, only to realize that it was completely irrelevant to the rest of the story. Or to see where the book could take the scientific aspects of a desert planet and a population with so little water, which it didn't other than a bit of lip service.

But the book stubbornly chose to disregard these more interesting avenues, and instead took the most straightforward, boring route of making this into a story about power struggle. Well, we could've saved ourselves the bother and just stayed on Earth for that.

Richard Biddle Your review is absolutely spot on. In my opinion it's also a brave review, given the 'classic' status accorded Dune.

Anne Smith Well I’d just go ahead and call it - Herbert’s prose is god-awful. I mean its BAD. And to @Sonofnothing - I like Faulkner. The reviewer’s taste in literature is unfortunately too discerning, and she just couldn’t stomach Herbert’s terrible prose. Too bad - cause the ideas are really cool. But execution- Yeesh…

Nathan Manske I finished the book in under a month and it’s my favorite book. If you aren’t smart enough to read science-fiction try something out

Kaveh LOOOOOL what is with these comments calling the OP not smart for not liking this book hilarious that they think this young adult book is too smart for us plebs to understand. Amazing.

Tiffany Sad that some love this book so much they are not able to let you have a different opinion without a character and intelligence assassination! (I haven’t read the book but appreciate your honest, personal feedback 😉)

Brijeisaw I completely understand where you are coming from as someone who is currently rereading the book. It is not an easy read at all simply because it feels as though you are reading something in gibberish. Now that I’m rereading I decided to bookmark the glossary and it is so helpful. Although I wish they could have given the definition at the bottom of the page this was definitely helpful. When you truly understand what everyone is talking about you feel so much more immersed but it will take more time and much more patience but for me, personally, it was so worth it. I would say give it another try but I completely understand if you don’t want to. This review was honestly a breath of fresh air so thank you for that.

A. Schostok Despite my 5☆ rating, I appreciate your review. The points you made make sense and I totally agree that this book isn't for everybody

message 509: by Renee (new) - rated it 4 stars

Renee It’s definitely more of a political book than anything. I would have been completely lost if I didn’t have a basic understanding of what was going on from the movies lol

Elizabeth Camero This review is spot on. I wanted to love this book, expected it even.

Kina Focareto I couldn’t agree more! Thank you for this honest, helpful, and brave review of a cult classic. I did find it much easier to keep track of characters and relationships after referencing a spark notes character review.

Smitty Werbenmanjensen I think the concept of Dune is really great but Frank Herbert just isnt that great of a writer. It's a hard read if only for what seems to be to assert his academic prowess over the reader. That's really my only problem with it but as the vessel that takes us through the universe it unfortunately makes the whole experience poor.

Karen Beard Ditto. Just finished it. Wanted to read the source material before watching the movie. It was very difficult to make sense of all the moving parts. After watching Dune part 1, I appreciated the basic plot that was teased out for the sake of the the movie. The cinematography and special effects helped bring the story to life. But the characters are rather flat and feels to me like every White Knight vs Imperialist Global Supervillian Let's battle it out to the death. Just not my taste.

what-she-reads-ky Ya I’ve been trying for weeks and it makes my eyes heavy… i will definitely not be able to get through this book. Sad I don’t love it but it is what it is. Loved this honest review. Just not my taste at all.

Gustavo Rodríguez Thanks for sharing your POV. Of course, I'm the opposite... definitely Dune is a masterpiece. A world creation with unforgettable characters, situations, quotes and philosophical reflections about mankind. For me, categorize Dune as a "power struggle story" It implies not having understood practically anything of the whole background. I understand that it can be a bit of a chore to read and that it's not what you'd typically expect from a science fiction story. And it is perfectly respectable, of course. But for me Dune is OBJECTIVELY a TOP work of literature.

message 516: by Peter (new) - rated it 3 stars

Peter Wright Okay, so I’m not the only one who struggled to read this!

message 517: by Leah (new) - rated it 4 stars

Leah Gorsline I thinks it’s a commentary on both politics, power and religious fervor set in a sci fi setting. I wasn’t expecting that either but had the opposite reaction and enjoyed that unexpected take of the making of a prophet/religious icon (and I’m not religious, just find religion as a sociological structure interesting). There were a few fights but I appreciate it wasn’t all battles and warfare.

Nicholas “Felt like I was dropped into the middle of a book” it’s literally how so many books start. In medias res.

message 519: by Bryant (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bryant Castro It honestly got better for me as I got further but it helps to see the movie first
