It featured a Cuban poet’s life portrayed through the eyes of a young girl. I liked the brief look into her fictionalized history and I enjoyed hearing her thoughts. Sometimes I thought the story was a little sparse with details, but that might have just been the poetic form it was written in. I still got a bit of the culture, though. The story itself wasn't something I ultimately fell in love with but I can see why it won an ALA award. It was good historical fiction novel and featured a topic I wasn't familiar with and illustrated it well.

I like how Engle weaves an engaging story through verse and while still being deeply rooted in a historical setting. Even though The Wild covers a variety of topics, I thought Engle balanced it well. It was interesting to read about a girl struggling with dyslexia and I enjoyed seeing how she overcame it, all the while saving her family in the process as well. I liked this book. I wouldn’t call it one of my favorites, but if you’re looking for a poetic narrative I might recommend this one. Fans of Engle won’t be disappointed.

And what was awesome was the publisher was HANDING OUT (aka FREE COPIES) of the hardback AND the author was there to sign it! Needless to say, I was pretty excited to read it. Plus it was told in verse and there aren’t enough of those in juvenile and YA lit.
I thought Lai did a good job of capturing the foreign culture and making it relatable to readers who might not be familiar with that type of environment. I liked the story and wanted a smooth resolution for the girl as she was dealing with these types of situations. While I did like this book and would recommend it, I was a little surprised to see it win a Newbery Honor. I can see why it won, but I probably wouldn’t have picked it.

The colors and detail were fabulous. I especially loved how the little red eft wandered throughout the book and was a key character. The poems were nice - nothing terribly fancy about them, but I did enjoy them. I really liked the blend of poetry and non-fiction to create a book about animals that is fun to read and yet still simple. I would definitely recommend.

Unfortunately, once I had the time to sit down and read it, I was not nearly as impressed. The first couple poems had been funny. But as I progressed through the book, I found several more poems that I found slightly disturbing, gross, or just a little too colorful. I didn't approve of all the ways humor was used in this book. Still, there were a couple poems in this book that made me smile. I didn't care for the illustrations at all. I couldn't get over some of the character's noses. I wanted them to be shorter or something. I was also a little disgruntled that several random objects in the pictures had smirking faces drawn on them. That was odd and a little bit disturbing. I'm not sure I would recommend.

It just wasn't as good as I thought it would be - considering that it won the Newbery Honor. I liked the style it was written in, with the poetry and smooth lines, but it wasn't fascinating. The story line was pretty intriguing. It was one I had not heard a lot of and I was grateful that I was getting some more information about it. All in all, it was a decent book and I would probably recommend, but it is not going at the top of my lists anytime soon.

For my Comm III class we only ended up reading a small sampling of them, but I enjoyed most of the pieces. It's a nice book with essays and short stories from a variety of authors and I would probably recommend as a good college textbook.

I also liked the outline of black ink that made the colors look more alive. The poems were sweet and often quite informative. And the author also included little snipits of information on the other side of the page, to provide you with a more indepth look at the creatures that were on the page. I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it.

The illustrations were very well done and I liked the different assortment of insects and bugs that were featured in this book. I didn't read this entire book out loud, but I did read one of the poems with my sister and it was quite amusing. I had to keep from laughing as we were saying different lines at the same time. I enjoyed this book, but I did feel like it a little simplistic. I think children who are interested in nature and poetry will enjoy this book though.

While I learned some things about the life of George Washington Carver from this book, I wouldn't label it one of my favorites because it didn't completely capture my attention. I would still recommend though.
