Okay gang, I got 50% through this dragfest and bizarre book about a lot of unpleasant people so you don't have to. I thought I was picking up a psychological thriller - no, this story is about an unlikable middle aged, dreary bore named Adrian who goes through women like toilet paper.
Every female in the book (including his own daughters) are seen through a lens of if they are fuckable or not. You'll get a description about their breasts, ass, legs, skin, smell, and hair. If Adrian thinks he can get a leg over, they are Aplus, if they are unkempt, curvy to being fat, eat too much in front of him, don't have their hair styled just-so, they are not worthy of his time.
Intellect? Personality? What's that? Of course, everyone he desires has chemistry with him.
When he demands from his ex if she is trying to have children with her new lover is when I bailed. Why? Because Caroline actually replies to this offensive and inappropriate question.
I was really surprised this book was written by a woman. I came to the conclusion that she must hate her own sex.
Maybe I didn't get the book. Maybe the book was a "see what an idiot Adrian is?! But wait for his redemption arc as he learns about life!" Guess what? IDGAF about his redemption arc. He creeps me out. I hope his kids get therapy. They'll need it for the abandonment issues and the narcissistic parenting.
This book reeked of inappropriate behavior throughout. The whole thing gave me The Secret Life of Walter Mitty vibes. If you want to read about a man-child who sees every woman as something he will screw if she's acceptable enough because he's lonely, but doesn't understand after two years how to feed a damn cat, this book is for you!
(don't believe me? Go read the highlights I made from the book.)...more
I won't rate this as it was a DNF. Sorry, but the heroine is too stupid to live. I really, really need to stop buying YA books and thinking the femaleI won't rate this as it was a DNF. Sorry, but the heroine is too stupid to live. I really, really need to stop buying YA books and thinking the female lead will act with some smarts instead of chasing tail.
I knew this whole thing would go downhill after the heroine was able to go on a transatlantic journey without a chaperone (easy fix, let her go with a family that abandons her once they reach their destination). Don't look for anything pretending to be historically accurate (modern speech, modern morals, items existing out of the right time).
BTW be sure to read some of the low reviews for this book if you are considering this read for a pre-teen. Like many books billed for YA this one deals has adult topics, in this case, prostitution among other things....more
