The psychology andFor most of this book, I would have considered a higher rating but unfortunately for me the denouement at the end was unbelievable. The psychology and context around DID (disassociative identity disorder) was absolutely fascinating- I was unaware that there is a great deal of controversy around whether the condition actually exists. I felt sorry for the family dragged into this story through compassion and love. Many thanks to Netgalley for an arc of this book....more
I have been on many diets during my life and none of them have stuck although most have been temporarily successful. This book is very user friendly. I have been on many diets during my life and none of them have stuck although most have been temporarily successful. This book is very user friendly. I have read other books about BED ( Binge eating disorder) and this one is by far the most readable and not too clinical, while citing many studies. The main message is that dieting is harmful and actually creates binge-eating. Hunger in people deliberately trying to go without food creates feelings of deprivation; so by having 3 meals a day plus 3 snacks a day is the best way to go. What we shouldn’t do is try to ‘save up our calories’ into one or two meals but space them out. I found this book very interesting and I do intend to try the 8 week programme. Many thanks to Netgalley for an arc of this book....more

I do believe as in this book, that some places retain the energy and memory of negative emotions and events. The combination of mythology and the philosophies of Jung was an inspired choice. Well written and researched, this would make an atmospheric film. Being set in an asylum, this has aspects in common with Shutter Island too....more

I happened upon this series last year when I was doing a reading challenge and needed a book with a day of the week in it! The main character is a psychotherapist, Frida, who inadvertently becomes embroiled in a missing persons and murder investigation. In this second outing, I was fascinated by Frida as a character. She is aloof, very private but also caring. We learn she is cut off from her family but now why. It is her astute observations that keep the case open and help to solve it. I am fascinated by the psychotherapeutic process but also feel the situation in this book, where Frida becomes a freelance consultant to the police, with permission to almost take on the role of a detective with initiative, was stretching reality a bit. Also, she supervises a young psychotherapist who admits to being flaky and letting his clients down. At one point she encourages him to take on a particularly vulnerable client - again - an unlikely practise. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book so much that I can’t give it any less than a full 5 stars. If you like psychological stories, this series could be for you! Recommended....more
