More importantly, though,
THIS IS CREEPY. ASS. SHIT.
You sure get what you pay for. Not limb-choppy creepy (yet, anyway), but eerie-mindfucky creepy. I thought reading the manga instead of watching the anime would keep my heart steady, but no such luck. Let's see how this goes.

So yeah, keep 'em coming.
Also kudos Inuyasha, for being a loud asshole instead of (just) a brooding hero, because it allows people to (repeatedly and hilariously) call you out on your shit....more

EDIT: Okay, now that I took some time to read a couple of reviews I realize this sitcom-y, plotless format is intentional, since it's not an actual adaptation of the anime. That being the case, fuck this. Anime it is....more

I like it that despite the little individual episodes, this clearly has a larger underlying arc. We're progressively given little pieces of the puzzle - that's my kind of story. Also it's dark enough to create a serious mood but not too much/ to the point where the violence gets so gratuitous it actually detracts from the story.

There's a slow awakening instead of a despair-propelled rebellion. The universe was very interesting, and I wanted to know more, the Hows, the Whys. It also raised a lot of cool questions: some new, some common to most dystopian fiction, which doesn't decrease their value.
Bad things about this book: EVERYTHING ELSE. GOOD GRIEF. Hated the writing. Nothing happened for the first half, then everything was mushed together at the end. The narrator, Cassia, made me want to claw my eyes out. Her character development was laughable, as was the romance (YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW THIS PERSON. AT ALL. WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?). Her new-found rebellious spirit/courage/sudden understanding of the way things really are seemed contrived and forced, just to suit her Mary-Sueness. (Hey, at least she felt right at home with all the other clichés, uh, I mean characters).I don't know, I just wanted the book to be done with already (even though I'm a sucker for closure, I don't know if I can put myself through the sequel).
If you like YA/dystopia/both, you might like this, but personally I'd recommend something like Uglies by Scott Westerfeld instead.
EDIT: Just read the sequels' synopsis. Yeah, it's not gonna happen. Amazing covers, though. ...more

It was an eI don't get the hullabaloo about this book at all. I mean, I'm rating this 4 stars, so I did like it: but it didn't exactly rock my world. It was an easy, semi-mindless read in a well-known type of setting. Many of the characters and their relationship dynamics were super cool and (dare I say it?) innovative, and the plot caught my interest well enough, at least for the first third of the book or so.
However, the writing was blah at best, I found myself not caring about the universe AT ALL (what were the kingdoms' names again?), and skimming through A LOT of descriptions/on-the-move bits. Also, the pace was strange to me: like, you had your (sort of non-closure-y, anti-climatic) climax when there were still ages to go until the end of the book, which made those last chapters kind of awkward. Many questions left unanswered.
Also, take a drink every time the word "for" is used as a conjunction to signify 'because'.
There's a good chance I'll read the sequels - maybe this story will get better - but I'm not exactly pissing my pants in anticipation....more
