Not that queerness fades into the background because the plot looks elsewhere, but that it's everywhere in our lives and our communities.
This book made me feel old and like a nostalgic mess not just because it's so high school (or college) but also because I read through the acknowledgments and was like, wait, Mariko Tamaki's partner is Heather Gold? I remember going to her SF comedy/variety shows c. 2005-2006 in tiny spaces packed with uncomfortable folding chairs, back when we found stuff to do via LaughingSquid and FunCheapSF! (Bizarrely, FunCheap is still around, I can't believe it.)
Now I'm in self-indulgent nostalgia land, but it also makes me think about how the author is doing this project from the perspective of a queer woman in her 40s, not one as young as, say, Tillie Walden. That's a fascinating thing to mull over.

Soft, adorable, sweet, loving, earnest, gentle, gorgeous illustrations. Lana's grieving her mom and her dad doesn't really get what she needs... but he's not a villain, just going through his own process of grief. Auntie Mae is a straight-up hottie willing to listen and learn and earns her the right to get back together with her unicorn-riding mermaid in the end. All of this plus a handy message about environmental interconnectedness, fixing mistakes, and sustainability!
tl;dr: QUEER, MER-UNICORN-RIDING MERMAIDS. A perfect gift for all the queer moms with young kiddos in your life. They'll honestly not even know what hit them....more

Adorable, quiet, sweet queer romance between two cute brown boys, one fat (who receives sincere and well deserved compliments on his hefty arms). GentAdorable, quiet, sweet queer romance between two cute brown boys, one fat (who receives sincere and well deserved compliments on his hefty arms). Gentle, fluffy, lovely soft pastel art that perfectly matches the dreamy, soft story. No villains, just sweetness. Feels like a contemporary webcomic to me in tone and scope.
Def has a (fabulous) Voltron Lance/Hunk fanart feel, too, visually.
tl;dr: a lovely addition to school and public libraries, esp middle school. excited to bring this to our mini pop up library at emerald city comic con this year!...more
