His books are confident and fast-paced, and I enjoyed his ability to throw together lots of unusual situations without caring if they looked silly. The result was a breakneck, surprisingly fun action fantasy that used science and history plots equally well. I'd recommend this book to people who like TV series that have a lot of cursing and fantasy elements but are still pretty clean....more

The world of Zanthia reminded me of the Chronicles of Narnia but with a bit more of an epic scope. There are three different races of humans who have links to mythological creatures and these creatures influence their destinies. The book is clean and for epic fantasy is a light read. ...more

Burns is a collection of restful and uplifting poems on the emotions of finding harmony in and comfort from nature. The book is structured into four parts—Clouds Moonlit; Cloudy Day Doorway; Windswept; and Wind Songs—with a variety of brief poems that lay out situations people might experience while connecting those situations to the sky—stars, moon, day, night, clouds, breezes, and blowing leaves. Intersection between different people or between different moments in life is a cornerstone of the book’s identity, with many meditative thoughts devoted to understanding others.
These poems are about more than expression and good use of words, they’re about relaxing. Over and over, I was drawn by a gentle guidance into swirling autumn leaves, dances with the stars, infinite love, and sunset clouds. Gary W. Burns is extremely accomplished and excels in graceful, artistic verses that capture an idea instantly, and the hopeful, but honest tone of his poetry made me nod my head in agreement more than once. In “On the Wind” he expertly compares people’s different experiences to birds flying on the breeze, and uses a few well-chosen words to do it. Several other notable poems are “Quietly There You Be,” “Leaving,” “Blue Ridge Twilight,” “Smile,” and “Days with You.” But the strength of Clouds: On the Wind is the sheer beauty of the world it pulls you into and the happy spirit with which you leave it. The book deserves a lot of praise for its resonant elegance, its serenity, and its peaceful approach to life’s realities.

His world is endlessly complex, varied, and filled with flights of fancy, yet completely true and simple as well. The characters ring with a deep, supple humanity, and I was captivated, wanting to know what would happen next. Suspense, comedy, mystery, adventure, romance—it’s all here. Orville’s delightful little quirks make him thoroughly well-rounded, and the underlying theme that love and honesty can overcome fears was handled as melodiously as the charming idea of the piano-like Metaphonium in which sets of keys provide portals to other worlds. Quiet side-kick Proto absolutely steals the show, his fears that he’s not loved and accepted threading a delicate subplot that is as poignant as it is satisfying. Verbally enchanting, emotionally human, and philosophically relevant, The Puzzle of the Last Metaphonium blends many genres into a really fun read.

It’s a companion to the HappyFeet Kids soccer program for young kids, which uses story time with the soccer ball to help preschoolers learn soccer and life skills. In the book, this fun approach is emphasized. Six diverse children (from the US, India, Mexico, and China) live and play together in the pleasant, peaceful land of Socceropolis with their coach, Jan. They soon encounter some truly unique friends—a group of little bobcats who swallowed magical balls and have now swelled to become soccer balls with fur and tails. The grumpy Bobcat-Balls, called The Bobs, have much to teach the eager children about soccer and teamwork.
Donald Dione’s book is a really good, fun, educational tool. Everything that would catch a child’s eye and make them feel included is present—detailed illustrations, imaginative concept with the bobcat soccer balls, hands-on activities, even a personalized place in the front of the book for the child reader to write their name and become one of the team. If you’ve got preschoolers and want to get them involved in sports, this is a great place to get their feet wet. The HappyFeet Kids Make New Friends is completely inviting, a quick and easy read-aloud, and encourages kids to think of the soccer ball as their close collaborator and friend. The wonderful little Bobs are a clever idea that will wow kids as the furry friends interact with the children, help them, and at the end of the book practice basic soccer skills with them.
