My class talked about the dedication to black boys who were all killed before reaching their 18th birthdays like Trayvon Martin and Tamir Rice. The students analyzed why the authors might have written this book specially dedicated to those boys. We analyzed the images and their connections to the words. This is a great book to talk about a tough subject, but my students who are predominately Latino really connected in a thoughtful way. It was a great mentor text to use to segue into issues of social justice (I'm at a Catholic school) and Black History month....more
