Not sure what to think of this one. I really liked the fairytale style of it and I enjoyed the overall story, but the romantic undertones between the seven year old protagonist and her nutcracker doll (who is really a cursed prince) was just weird. At the end of the story, when she breaks the curse, it says that one year later they got married... Does this mean she was EIGHT? Or did some time pass after the main events and when she broke the curse? I'm so confused and kind of disturbed. Oh well....more

Some of the selections were excellent, some were just meh, and a few were downright yuck (for some reason the editors decided that including liberation theologians was a good idea). This book combined Christmas coziness with mystery and suspense in a way that reminded me of Agatha Christie and The Westing Game - an odd flavor, but it worked. Sometimes the plot devices are a bit too convenient, and I wish there would have been a bit more of a resolution at the end, but all things considered a delightful story, especially for this time of year....more
