Valerie and her brother are both part of the rulingMy original Justice is Calling audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.
Valerie and her brother are both part of the ruling family of vampires. When her brother attacks her and leaves her for dead, she has no choice but to leave her home and take the long trip to New York. The world is slowly rebuilding after a world-wide apocalypse 150 years ago. Europe is run by vampires, but the New World, though it has its share of vampires, is far further along in rebuilding. Valerie has to get there before her brother and his soldiers, who want to conquer it for their clan.
Valerie is rare in that she has an innate sense of justice, something unknown in the vampire world, and vows to protect the people of New York. If she doesn’t succeed, the New World will be plunged into the chaotic Hell that is Europe, which will turn the humans into nothing more than walking food.
This is an interesting story in that it mixes a post-apocalyptic world with vampires and werewolves. It is both sci-fi and horror in equal measures. There is plenty of action, including a swashbuckling battle aboard warring dirigibles, hordes of mindless vampires called Nosferatu and hostile werewolves. The characters are likable and well developed. We listen as Valerie, already extremely capable, learns about her growing powers. It is ultimately a battle of good versus evil.
The story is performed by Kate Rudd who does an excellent job. She is easy to listen to and her character voices match what the listener expects them to sound like. She holds the mood well and the characters are easily discerned. An excellent performance.
This unusual story should appeal to vampire enthusiasts, action junkies and fantasy/sci-fi fans alike. It is a fun twist on the traditional vampire stories. The book wraps up nicely but will have you excited to listen to the next books in the series. Recommended.

The Rising by Brian Keene is a horrifying, nightmare induciMy original The Rising audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.
The Rising by Brian Keene is a horrifying, nightmare inducing listen! (When I read it in book form I thought that was scary enough but now, listening to it as an audiobook I know better!)
Jim Thurmond was a prepper who prepared an underground bunker for when the end of the world came along. Little did he know he’d need it but not for the reasons he believed. There are just some things a father and a husband should never have to do, ... except, unfortunately, Jim. Contemplating suicide after having removed his pregnant and now dead wife from his bunker, Jim receives a call from his son – his son who needs him. Jim must now traverse through hundreds of miles of zombies of all kinds, maniac men who believe they are in charge and try to rescue his son. With the aid a few good people he encounters along the way he sets out to rescue his son. Will he be in time?
Brian Keene is the master of horror. His books are terrifying as they demonstrate time and again how no one is in control, chaos truly does rule. Keene is detailed and his imagery is perfect instilling complete and total fear.
Joe Hempel, the narrator did an excellent job of performing the book. His talent shines through as he voices the wide range of emotions each person experiences from fear to desperation to psychotic. Hempel excelled at providing this already terrifying book with more horror as he captured the emotions perfectly. Well done!
If you love horror – these two – Keene and Hempel are an excellent pair!
There were no issues with the audiobook or the quality of the production.
What happens when you have spent your entire militaryMy original Full Moon Rising audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.
What happens when you have spent your entire military career fighting monsters and keeping the human race safe only to discover that you are one of the monsters? An elite squad of men and women has been keeping the human race safe from vampires and werewolves and other paranormal “monsters.” What they didn’t know was that their superhuman strength and abilities to move at the speed of light was far more than a mere drug to heighten their innate skills.
In this book Jack returns to this squad a married man with a mother-in-law – Nadia and Natasha both have realized something dark and deadly is coming and they try to help the hunters. Bombarded with new information on the augmentation, the squad is fighting internally, struggling with the information that they are now werewolves. Not only do they have to accept what they are but now they are joining forces with vampires and others to defeat a common enemy. The Sicarii are deadly and making their moves – wait until you discover who is behind the Sicarii and what he is planning!
The author, Heath Stallcup did an amazing job with details, planning and executing a clear plot; the plot could easily have become convoluted and confusing. It is evident that Stallcup took his time developing characters, story lines and twists and turns. I did appreciate his paying homage to Mark Tufo (one of my favorite zombie authors as well) – when I heard the name of the ex-monster squad member I have to admit my mouth fell open. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
I have not experienced the first book yet, but plan to do so soon. I thought this book was a good segue into the next book in the series. Although I have not read or heard the first one, I can honestly say I will be finishing this series.
Jack Voorhies was a solid narrator. His talented voice made the characters realistic and different enough to tell them apart. There were no hokey or annoying voices – the characters were represented much like I envisioned. He seemed as caught up in the story as his listeners. He spoke with a rhythm that was engrossing. One knew when there was action coming as he began to pick up appropriately. Voorhies brought the characters to life in my opinion. He has moved onto my “love to listen to” list.
There were no issues with the production.

Whispers by Heath Stallcup rABR's original Whispers audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.
NOTE: Violence and Rape Scenes
Whispers by Heath Stallcup richly proves that love is a strong emotion that knows no bounds. Neither does vengeance!
Sheriff James Tolbert and his beautiful fiancé are confronted by an evil, greedy rancher, the rancher’s son and their ranch hands. All who believe they are above the law. The fiancé dies a horrible death alongside Tolbert who is forced to watch her slow painful death. The evil doers take gratuitous violence to the extreme leaving Tolbert nearly in pieces.
Move ahead a few decades and meet the descendants of the evil doers all converging in the same location. Mix in a couple of grave robbers and one vengeful ghost and the police have their hands full trying to solve the brutal and seemingly unconnected murder cases that are popping up in abundance.
A cast of characters that include deputies, an ornery Sheriff, a constable, a history writer, a medium of sorts and a team of Ph.D. ghost busters, the descendants, and a couple of misfit drug taken grave robbers. Each character is fully developed as the story needs them to be allowing the story to flow through time and location easily.
It comes down to who will win – the vengeful spirit Sheriff Two Guns Tolbert or will the police and ghost busters put the kibosh on him before he gets his revenge? A couple of surprises throw the reader for a loop at the end.
Excellently written and vividly described in great details. Although the rape scenes were not vividly described, there is no doubt how vicious they were.
I felt myself rooting for Two Guns Tolbert but in the end … no, I still wanted him to win.
A long listen but one filled with twists and turns, action packed excitement and realistic characters. At one time in my life I was a paranormal researcher. Stallcup did an excellent job of researching thus making the haunting more real.
Stallcup is an author that knows how to tell a story!
This is a long audio but one that you will enjoy. A well deserved 5 Star rating.
Aaron Shook did an excellent job of narrating. Although I hated his whiney voice for a couple of the characters, he nailed each and every one of them!
No issues with production.

Pirates of Mars by Chris Gerrib was a fast paced scABR's original Pirates of Mars audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.
Pirates of Mars by Chris Gerrib was a fast paced sci-fi novel. Life on Mars is what I would picture life in Australia was like in the 1800’s when convicts were sent there to live. Rough, uncivilized and full of the criminal element or those seeking a better life. Life on Mars was similar – rough, uncivilized to a great degree and full of opportunistic seeking people where they even charge for air!
Peter Grant, Lieutenant of the Volunteer Rescue Station, is but one of the latest captured by the Pirates seeking riches in gold, guns and other items. The pirates seek ransom not only for the ship but for Peter Grant. Jack Williams of the Volunteer Space Rescue Corp doesn’t take kindly to leaving Peter Grant behind. The Space Rescue is infamous for paying ransoms, but this time there is no money to be pay out nor is there an arsenal to launch a full scale rescue. As a result, Williams implements a rescue mission to kidnap Peter Grant back with friends at the helm!
The plot was fast paced and easy to follow. Character development lacked with the rescue team but the pirates, there was a bit more. The pirate women were all strong and “do it themselves” type of women where men just weren’t needed to rescue them.
Overall, the book was fun and fast with a few interesting twists. If you love sci-fi fantasy with a futuristic taste, this is a good listen for you.
Gary McKenzie did a good job of reading the book but it was obvious he was reading it and not performing it. There was little to no distinction to the different characters through his voice.
Production was fine; I had no issues with it.
