Casey introduces our main characters, does a bit of world building and in the final few pages sets up the premise of the show, priming us for episode 2. And that's it.
Don't get me wrong, the show... er... book is well written, the characters are interesting, the universe that they live in is intriguing, it's just that not a lot actually happens. I kept waiting for the story to start, but all this book does is set things up for a story that will presumably be told in books 2 and three.

Why, I felt so elegant and sophisticated getting all the references! And before you can slide into a Schiaparelli gown and sip on a glass of champagne, there’s a shocking murder of a famous German tennis player! Spies, lies and fancy bow ties. Our hero decides the best way forward is to pull a Hari Sheldon and create a Foundation... err... I mean... a Human Knowledge Bank at the very edge of the universe, to hopefully speed up the revival of human civilisation after the fall. Wackiness ensues. Anyhow, it's just volume one of six, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Proper good old fashioned space opera. Heinlein would be proud -- If only they'd thrown in a juvenile to say "Huh?" periodically. ...more

So The third book is the one where the romance starts to heat up. Except kind of not. Oh that’s right Kate, don’t forget you’re reading a YA fantasy. So there’s a scene where our heroine and her secret boyfriend, the Prince, decide to spend the night together. She takes off her fancy ballgown and… and… puts her privates… ahem… military uniform… on instead. And they wander about the camp chastely kissing behind assorted tents. Also the hero’s sweet nothings are all far more nothing than sweet. With a solid dollop of cringe splodged on top. Honesty I wish the author just left the romance out of it entirely, not something I say all that often....more
