Had I known going in that this book's entire plot would be centered around the slaughter and consumption of dragons both adult and infant, I'd never have picked it up. (Well, that's not true; it does have "dragon" in the title, so quite likely I would have been lured in by that and the beautiful cover.)
Unfortunately, nothing about this book worked for me. If you're a dragon fan, or just an animal/pet fan in general, this is not the book for you. There is only sadness to be found here....more

Why did I dare to give a dragon book such a low rating? Ultimately, it just wasn't for me. Nothing worked for me. Somehow, despite the fact that there were dragons (eastern dragons, western dragons referred to as wyrms, and wyverns), I was bored the whole time. This book could easily have been cut in half, and nothing would have been lost from the story.
As for the dragons, they didn't have much page time in this behemoth of a book. (view spoiler)[Most of the "good" eastern dragons died, and the "evil" western dragons were, obviously, all evil. What was their motivation for destroying the world? Just because they're *evil*? That doesn't work for me. Therefore, this central conflict not only bothered me, it held no weight. (hide spoiler)]
Regarding the humans, I was bored by them all. I have no idea why this book didn't click for me; perhaps it was the immense size and glacial pace of the story.
One star for pretty writing, and one star for the fact that the book literally put me to sleep. I listened to the audiobook (at least, I tried to) and it defeated my chronic insomnia every time!...more
