La scrittura è magnifica, i personaggi sono tridimensionali, eppure sembrano muoversi in un mondo al di fuori del tempo. Questo mondo è il Metropol, il quale risulta sospeso tra le nuvole, ai miei occhi, proprio grazie alla capacità narrativa dell’autore, ai suoi giochi letterari e all’ironia che circola nei corridoi dell’hotel. Un luogo in cui vorrei stare, abitare, non perché voglia diventare una persona priva di diritti civili come il nostro Conte Rostov, ma per respirare quell’aria frizzante, sempre in movimento, l’atmosfera di un luogo che, sebbene mutato dal passare del tempo, ha sempre un fascino particolare, un non so che di magico, favolistico, da racconto di fiaba.

La Storia, quella con la S maiuscola, è naturalmente presente nel libro, incardina i personaggi all’hotel, li trasforma, li fa vivere e morire in determinati modi. Sembra quasi, comunque, che l’albergo sia un punto di snodo e, allo stesso tempo, un porto franco, un luogo in cui si muovono i destini dei protagonisti e, contemporaneamente, un posto sicuro, confortante, per gli attori in scena. Sembra quasi che il Metropol stesso sia protagonista, insieme a Rostov, Emil, Andrej, Nina, Sof’ja e alle tante comparse, e non solo la scenografia di fondo.

Molto belle le interazioni tra Rostov e le tre donne della sua vita, ovvero Nina, Anna e Sof’ja. In particolare ho apprezzato come, leggendo il libro, si possa capire la profonda differenza tra Nina e Sof’ja, i loro modi diversi di venire al mondo e di crescere in mondi completamente dissimili: l’autore non ha avuto bisogno di scriverlo sulla pagina, ma semplicemente ha mostrato i diversi comportamenti delle due bambine/ragazze/donne.

La narrazione, sebbene in terza persona, è come se esprimesse implicitamente la visione del mondo del Conte, una visione intelligente, pronta a cogliere i particolari, ironica e piena di gusto. Le numerose citazioni letterarie/musicali/cinematografiche danno carattere alla voce narrante e al personaggio, lo collocano in un contesto culturale ricco e prolifico, lo aiutano a esprimere concetti, deduzioni, ragionamenti, senza farlo cadere nel banale, rendendo frizzante la lettura.

Un libro che ho cominciato arrancando (24 giorni e solo il 14% letto), si è rivelato uno dei migliori romanzi dell’anno, grazie anche alla totale immersione personale degli ultimi tre giorni nella lettura matta e non disperatissima. La disperazione è arrivata quando ho girato l’ultima pagina e, oltre alle note, non c’era altro da leggere. Oh, mi mancherà Rostov!...more
