Such lush language is used to describe perfect meals, it's almost impossible to read this book without wanting to go out and find these chiefs, and haSuch lush language is used to describe perfect meals, it's almost impossible to read this book without wanting to go out and find these chiefs, and have one of those perfect meals yourself. I love it when Ruth turns her keen eye of observation onto herself, watching herself sometimes act in disguise, sad or fabulous or deeply terrible.
And I ach for the young couple who saved up their money for a terrible meal, because I remember being that couple.
Bravo Ruth... please keep writing more and more and more.

The amount of abuse that these kids went through made for a tough read. It's interesting to read this after The Glass Castle and Running with Scissors, other stories about equally difficult childhoods, but each author had different ways to protect themselves. Running with Scissors was about using humor in the face of pure shit. Glass Castle had indeed, a wall around how awful a childhood could be. Julia's story was about staying alive by staying together... and losing that too. I'll remember this story for a very long time. ...more

Oh, she is such a beautiful writer, and just the type of writer that I love. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I kept reading sections to my foodie husband, and it was just a delight to, on top of that, read about berkeley and boonville and truckee... living in oakland, my husband cooked at the boonville hotel, and my parents live in tahoe.
Her love stories are so beautifully honest, and reminded me of one of my favorite authors, Marion Winick. Her stories of trying to get pregnant, and her attempts to adopt - left me in tears. Now, do I loan this book out, or keep it close in my bookshelf... ...more
