I read The Bell Jar in high school but that was a very long time ago. The Bell Jar is harrowing, dark, and depressing as it describes the mental health descent of the main protagonist, Esther Greenwood. Greenwood is institutionalized at an asylum and receives electric shock treatments. Prior to her institutionalization, she attempts suicide by several means.

The author, Dav Pilkey, suffered from ADHD, dyslexia, and behavioral problems as a child. He spent his time creating comic books. His second grade teacher ripped up the comic books he had drawn and written and told him he couldn’t spend the rest of his life making comic books. Creepy is how Greg, the main character, describes Elf.
I had heard about Elf on the Shelf but did not know the Elf’s true purpose. The book, The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition, shares in a poetry format how the elf is a Santa spy.
The book has gorgeous artwork and the poetry rhythm and rhymes are well done. However, I agree with Greg that the whole concept is creepy and it is an interesting way to attempt to get children to behave....more

No wonder that Greg, the main character in Diary of a Wimpy Kid, feels so stressed out about being watched so closely during the holidays. ...more
