I do not care about Navani and her asinine mistakes, nor do I care about Shallan and her MPD. Ok, Adolin and Maya are interesting but I only want to hear about Kaladin. Cause he's amazing. This book developes Wit and Rysn some more, as well as Rlain, which is cool. But there is far too much Navani for my taste!...more

(Did you know that the 45 uprising probably wouldnt have even been started without Lochiel Cameron, and that Lochiel's grandfather was such a fierce fighter that when he was in battle with the English and was pinned to the ground, he twisted his head back and bit out the throat of the man holding him?) Really, if you want to make up a world of fake Highlanders, go make up a world of fake Highlanders, but please don't call it historical! Call it fantasy, please! If this book was labeled fantasy I think I'd have liked it OK, but as it was, it fell kind of flat for me....more

It's a pretty far cry from a love story, but if you want your hair to stand on end, this might be what you were looking for....more

This should be a kind of cliché mafia love story, but somehow it isn't. (By the way, those Mafia types are seriously bad, wicked people. They don't have saving graces, they're just depraved murderers in real life. We love to imagine reforming them, but when someone's willing to shoot a father of twelve in the back for no reason or murder two little girls who were picking cherries off the tree under which a getaway car was buried, let's say that ship sailed a while ago.) So in that sense, this was a little unrealistic, but it worked! Really, really worked, in a creepy yet fascinating way that you just can't put down....more

You know they can't win and the larger part of Scottish people were wantonly slaughtered after Culloden and then callously starved to death when England decided to turn Scotland into a giant sheep farm. However, this is about MacGregors! One can make the exception for this amazing clan. And this is a very well written, clever and entertaining story about the most clever and entertaining Scotsmen ever bred and born. ...more

[For me] I really like how the author brings the battles and scenes to life, so that you'll always remember how many Scots died at Prestonpans, and so forth. But what just ruins the work for me are the characters. You have basically got a lot of Novus Ordo Catholics (Or we can just call them what they are, fakes) from 1995 transplanted into 1740s, thus completely destroying the picture and the authenticity. The author takes away the true gallantry of Catholic Scotsmen loyal to their rightful king and prostitutes them out as strippers wearing tartan. I would recommend Nigel Tranter's MacGregor trilogy if you wanted realism. That said, this is my favorite book in the series because I think Clare is a terrible influence on Jamie, and while I don't like him too much, he's better when she's not there. And there's almost a third of a book of Jamie without Clare. Amen....more
