I finished this massive book in a sitting over 26 straight hours, if that says anything about how it just utterly sucked me in. I'm going to be thinking about this book for a long time....more

Though the author is one generation before me, and was also a bit older when they left, her family's emigration journey eerily mirrors our own that my mom had recounted. It feels surreal, thinking about how scary and dangerous the trip had been, how precarious every step was.
I'm left both humbled and thankful for the author for helping me relate to my parents in a way I couldn't before opening this book. It's a treasure....more

"If Officer Cruise were sitting here, what would you say to him?"

Absolutely phenomenal. I've heard so much"If Officer Cruise were sitting here, what would you say to him?"
"I'd ask him if he wished he shot me too."
Absolutely phenomenal. I've heard so much hype about this book and I'm thrilled to say that it really lived up to that hype for me. The writing was clever and poignant; I cried and and laughed with these characters and just fell in love with them through their journey.
Starr is a great protagonist. I loved her unique perspective of being in-between these two worlds, and I found her inner struggle to balance both sides of herself extremely compelling. She's a very easy character to like and empathize with.
This book broke my heart into a million pieces at points, and I had to set it down occasionally because the subject matter hit me so hard. Amid all the injustices, though, finishing it left me with a sense of hope. It's so special to me and I'll readily recommend this to everyone. ...more

I had read and liked Han Kang's previous book The Vegetarian, but I greatly prefer this one. Her beautiful prose combined with the brutal subject matter is an addicting combination, and I highly recommend this to everyone, even if you don't normally read historical fiction....more

At first, when I finished Full Tilt and read that the sequel would set up Kacey and Teddy to fall in love, I wasn't okay with that at all. I'm glad I waited before resuming this, because after emotionally distancing myself from the first book a bit, I finally felt OK with continuing the story with an open mind.
Their friendship and eventual relationship was a slow burn, and felt natural and inevitable and I found myself quickly rooting for them despite how 'taboo' their situation is. I liked how completely different their dynamic is from the one Kacey had with Jonah.
Emma's writing is incredibly readable, but also has an uncanny ability to tug at your heartstrings, and it's just magical. I didn't think this could top the first book, but I was wrong. Totally don't regret putting off sleep to finish this in a sitting haha....more
