But sBeg for Mercy is a story about a 16 year old girl succubus named Mercy (clever). I'm giving it 3 stars for the content and some of the dialogue. But seriously, I loathed most of the characters. Loathed I tell you! And that’s where it lost two stars.
I’ll start with Maggie: the worst best friend one could possibly have Dear Maggie, [image] Here are of some examples of Maggie’s suckyness that all take place in only the first 31 pages: 1. [Maggie] wanted me to make a decision and not make her look bad in front of this group of seniors she so desperately wanted to impress” 2. “I would have expected Maggie or Paul to check on me. But apparently, Brent held Maggie’s interest more than I" 3. “'Mags can we go now?’ I asked. Hoping she would hear the pleading in my voice. 'Eme,’ Maggie said. She’d shorten my name to one letter long ago. ‘Can’t we stay just a bit longer? It seems like Luke is keeping you company,’ she said with a wink" Okay there are two things wrong with this. First: Eme is three letters, okay? Say it with me now E-M-E. It's as easy as 1-2-3. She does know how to count to three right? Second: what the hell Maggie? She just abandons Mercy over and over again for her boyfriend. Whereas when Maggie needed Mercy later in the book, Mercy went to help her straight away. [image] Um hello? Friend code? What ever happened to hoes before bros, chicks before dicks, sisters before misters, lipstick before dipstick, besties before testies? Maggie drags Mercy to countless parties, where she promptly ditches Mercy to go make out with her boyfriend. When Mercy is inevitably bullied and embarrassed at said party, which happens a lot, Maggie still won’t leave. And then Maggie gets mad at Mercy for getting mad at her. And Mercy is just like: [image]
Now moving on to her mom. So Mercy is a succubus, which basically means that she has the power to kill whoever she kisses, but her mom just kept her in the dark. The side effects of Mercy’s kisses are DEATH, and her mother never feels the need to tell her? That is at least until Mercy actually does almost kill a guy, then her mom is like, “well shit. I guess my teenage daughter is involved with boys” Wooooowwwwww… that's a big surprise. And then when Mercy wants explanations about, you know, what the hell a succubus is and how she is suppose to control it, her mom still won’t help her (yeah because that worked out so well the last time, mom). I really tried to like her mom, because young adult books are like Disney movies: it’s rare for the parents to be alive. So I tried to appreciate her Mom, but I just couldn’t get over the fact that Mercy's mom wasn’t being honest with her.
Next, her love interests. Yep, plural. Forget love triangle. Forget love square. It's a love pentagon. A freaking PENTAGON. So basically there is Luke (who lies to her), Paul (who has no personality), and Sebastian (who lies to her and has no personality). But don’t worry! There is Flynn (who is amazing). Oh Flynn... [image] If you couldn’t tell, I like Flynn the best. He is basically the only reason I kept reading. At the beginning he was kind of a jerk and definitely a player (still is) but with good reason! I’m not going to spoil anything so you're just going to have to read the book to see how awesome Flynn is.
And finally Mercy. Mercy was… okay. I didn’t hate her but I didn’t particularly like her either. There were three things that really bugged me about her. 1. She never really pushed for answers from her Mom about what she was. She asked, but let it drop after the first no. I had a big problem with this in the beginning of the book, but later Mercy had huge character growth and stopped putting up with her mom’s secrecy. It’s about damn time Mercy! [image] 2. She would always run away whenever someone was mean to her, like literally run. But I like main characters that stick up for themselves and never run away from a fight. I mean she doesn’t have to go all beast on them and make them cry, but I would have liked it if she would've defended herself now and then. So she loses some cool points for being such a little wimp. 3. Mercy feels sorry for herself. All. The. Time. This is the kind of thing she thinks a lot: “Sullenly, I wondered why I was ever born. It totally sucked to be me”. Just… no. She's a succubus, and she can’t kiss anyone. Boo hoo. I understand that it isn’t ideal circumstances, but with her amount of self pity you would think that she she had a week to live. [image]
Overall, I think this was a pretty good book. I had a lot of some problems with all some of the characters, but there were definitely some good moments, and I’m sure a lot of people will really enjoy it.
I was kind of confused while reading this book. Not because the plot was too complex or the words were too big, I just had no idea what the hell the cI was kind of confused while reading this book. I’ll start with Seth. I am not surprised that Ellie thought he was the serial killer, because he is c-r-e-e-p-y. Sure he’s not that serial killer, but there’s a first time for everything. He’s already got creepy stalker down so why not take that next step into murderer? I truly believe he could get there. I mean he broke into Ellie’s room! No sane person does that.
Ellie and Seth: Ellie and Seth’s relationship changed so fast it gave me whiplash. Apparently having a suspected murderer for a boyfriend can prove to be quite the obstacle for a relationship. Especially when she actually thought he was the killer for like half of the book. I mean one minute Ellie is stalking Seth, then he’s stalking her, then she believes he is a psychotic serial killer, then she doesn’t, then he breaks into her room like a creep, then he finds a way to absolve himself, then she doesn’t think he is the killer anymore, then he does some other creepy thing like expertly throw ninja stars or sharpen knives or something, and then she thinks he is the killer again, then she gets into a car with him, then she gets out of the car because the author must have remembered that the lead character isn’t suppose to be that dumb, then Seth keeps stalking her, then she tazes him (ahahahahaha), then she doesn’t think he’s the killer anymore (view spoiler)[(only because someone else tries to kill her) (hide spoiler)].

I just didn’t know what to think anymore. Just pick a side Ellie! Is he a killer or not? My guess would be yes, just not the killer they refer to in the book. But really, Seth has some issues that he needs to work out. Possibly with a therapist. Possibly in an insane asylum. Just saying.

Here’s a question: why do her parents go on a freaking vacation when their daughter is in mortal danger? I’m surprised Ellie lived past infant-hood with those parents.
Oh and I really didn't like her sister. She was just so fake. And rude. And mean. She kind of reminded me of the step sisters from Cinderella, all preppy and self-entitled. The whole time I was just hoping Ellie would stop putting up with her crap and just slap her in the face.

That right there, is called justice.
In the end, this book wasn’t terrible, but I’m not going to be raving about it anytime soon either. I just got to the point where I didn’t even care what happened to the characters or the plot anymore. I’m sure some people will really like it, but it just wasn’t for me.
