That was intense...i listened to the audio for this book, and there's no audio for Book 2 available. Which means I have to immediately cancel my reading plans to borrow the ebook because I NEED to know what is about to happen!
I've never read a book quite like this before. I loved the unique world that Danica lives in. I have had this book on my TBR for a while, I'm really glad I finally got to it....more

I was under the impression it was, because it was recommended to me to read after finishing Verity by Colleen Hoover (which WAS a thriller). This is written more as a mystery to the reader that is slowly unraveled for us by the main character.
However, I loved it! This is my first Alessandra Torre book and my interest in her others is definitely piqued. I enjoyed this story and was sad to leave the characters behind. Emotional and dark but also heartwarming when it counts. ...more

I’m not arguing that these characters were rational or made good decisions, or that any of the events that took place were truly believable, but this I’m not arguing that these characters were rational or made good decisions, or that any of the events that took place were truly believable, but this was a fun ride from start to finish. It satisfied my craving for some danger & drama. Cliffhanger so have the next book ready to go if you get sucked in like I did....more

It was chock full of angst, drama, angst, drama and more drama. And I absolutely loved it. Normally I don't really care for YA or NA but then I read a book that I love that belongs to one of those genres. This was an example, as is another of LJ Shen's books Vicious, which I also loved. This is my third LJ Shen book and I’ve just started another.
The two protagonists here are unlikable at first. Daria is the definition of entitlement and snark. She sees herself as a victim in life which makes it impossible for her to change since she doesn't think she's doing anything wrong. Penn is a kid from the wrong side of the tracks who falls for Daria, until he finds out she screwed over his sister Sylvia in the worst way (not really a spoiler-this happens within the book's first pages). The drama unfolds when they are forced back into each other's lives several years after their first encounter.
I loved that I didn't like Daria (mean, spiteful characters are fascinating to me when reading from their POV) but also that the author gave her some redeeming qualities that were exposed only when things started getting really bad for her.
I generally just loved this entire book. It was entertaining, funny, anxiety-inducing, tear-jerking, heartwarming, shocking, etc. etc. etc. So much fun to read!...more

I already have the next one in the series ready to go. The narration was EXCELLENT. At times I feel like I don't have the brain power for historical fiction but this was clear and concise without compromising on the quality of writing. I haven't read Philippa Gregory in years but I was reminded of how awesome she is. And the way she describes a mother's love for her children is spot on and brought tears to my eyes more than once....more

I was REALLY annoyed when Jake (view spoiler)[accused Abby of sleeping with Owen, all because “someone saw them” together, DESPITE the fact that a very damaged Abby literally JUST lost her virginity to Jake. I really didn’t buy that response but it had to happen in order for Jake to blow Abby off for the next 4 years. Again, did NOT make sense for his character to react that way and determine Abby to be guilty without even speaking to her first. I mean this is someone he took guardianship of with no questions asked and now he takes someone’s word over hers in a second? Pfft. (hide spoiler)] I also felt that Owen made the switch (view spoiler)[from helpful nice guy to sexual predator (hide spoiler)] in a very sudden, convenient way and while I’m sure that does happen in real life it just felt forced here. But of course that had to happen as well in order to further the story that the author was trying to tell.
A lot of drama went down towards the end, I thought I was almost done with the book and then all of a sudden here comes (view spoiler)[Owen shooting up the place and then we’re not even sure if Abby’s daughter is going to live?? That was like, too much. Not in the way that I emotionally couldn’t handle it but more like, REALLY? You really went there? (hide spoiler)]
And THEN (view spoiler)[it turns out that Jake IS Abby’s father and Abby just never considered getting a paternity test all due to eye color? Hmmm… (hide spoiler)] Again, that felt manufactured in order to provide the “twist” at the end for the HEA.
All in all it was an okay read. Started off promising but then descends into all kinds of crazy drama. ...more
