This book was definitely written with upper elementary school and middle school kids in mind. It has a lot of poop, fart, etc jokes. Tone is often very irreverent. ...more

She longs for success like fellow ballerina Joséphine Moreau. Despite pouring all of herself into dance, Laure doesn't find the success she wants until Josephine invites her to strike a dark bargain to help. When things take a tragic end, Laure must decide if the bargain is worth everything she stands to lose.
The premise of this sounded really intriguing but the execution felt a little bit lacking. There were chunks of the book where it felt as thought the plot actually stalled. It started out incredibly boring and I considered DNF-ing about an hour into it. I stuck it through though. Overall, a 3.5 rounded down. It just didn't feel very believable.

While recovering, she beings to explore the town and meets a ratkin named Fern who runs the local bookshop and a dwarf baker. Viv finds ways to help Fern around the bookshop in exchange for books. Along with a gnome who wants to be part of Rackham's Rangers, Viv discovers the secret of the mysterious figure in grey and a secret about the necromancer she was hoping to defeat.
I was so excited to be able to read this an an e-ARC. Baldree once again has a hit. In this prequel to Legends and Lattes, we get a glimpse of what Viv was like before she retired. I loved the friendship that developed between Viv and Fern. As a librarian, I especially loved Fern's love of books and of connecting the right book to the reader. Potroast is adorable, I want to protect him forever. Satchel is an amazing character. As with Legends & Lattes, this one is a bit of a slow start but gets so much better as you go.

He eagerly selects two books from it only to discover that they were both returned on the same day, which happens to be the same day the old library burnt down. Evan embarks on a journey to try to find out what happened and what connect a famous mystery writer has to the town.
This was a cute audiobook to listen to. The narrator was excellent. While I saw twists coming as an adult, I don' think that it would be as easy for kids and even knowing what was going to happen, it was still enjoyable. I liked how Evan kept trying different angles with the mystery and persevered to find the answer....more

One day, they see a golden retriever being buillied and step in to help. Frankie gets knocked out, awakens to meet the Pawtheon, and agrees to a series of quests to see if they are able to become the Dog Knight.
I loved the representation in this book. You don't often encounter non-binary characters and especially not in children's books. The characters of Frankie and Platinum were awesome. I also loved that Frankie's quests weren't just about showing that they carry the virtues that dogs find important - loyalty, kindness, honesty, justice, stubbornness, and smell - it was a journey of discovery and healing for Frankie as well. Very cute story. Would recommend.

At middle school, Jess doesn't really have any friends like Olivia, so D&D is her refuge that she closely guards. Olivia on the other hand, wants to open their group up to other players and tries to start a club. When another player joins, Jess struggles to accept him and tries to sabotage him in game which results in her and Olivia having a fight. Will Jess be able to repair things in real life and in game?
This was a super cute middle grades graphic novel. Jess is pretty easy to relate to. You can understand why she doesn't want a new player in the game, especially once you learn the backstory of that new player. Middle school is a hard time. I loved that the book included stat blocks for monster and for characters in the book. It made the connection to D&D much more tangible. I also enjoyed how Jess would transform into her character from the game. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
