So what made pick this up? I’m reading all previous #spfbo winners (because I’m part of a team judging this year’s candidates) All have them that I read so far have been 4⭐️& above. So even though this pitch read like a sausage fest to me, I went in with an open mind. French, btw, won in 2016.
To be fair, I understand why it caught people’s attention. The worldbulding is ruthless & there is definitely a gross shock factor at play. But the orphanage gets the same amount of page time as the whore house. It’s weird. Oh! And in the middle of the testosterone-filled banter, there is a strong AF FMC. So I’m saying, on the surface, it checks some boxes.

This is my 3rd Atwater read this year, and I just find her stuff extremely charming. I’m not religious, but I know enough to realize what sweet gem this is.
I picked this one up because she won #spfbo in 2022 & I totally get why.

Heavy in dialogue, (sometimes a little predictable) this almost reads like a script. Episode 1: Angry, blade-loving girl has unlikely loyal friends and ish is going down. Stop asking questions and get on this 200 page omnibus.
So when the magic heats up around 100 pages in, McClung’s creativity really starts to feel extra delightful. i.e The special drink at the funerals. And I’d like to give McClung’s props on the overall weaving of plot/character structure. Though there is a fair amount of characters, they all play an important roles.
I hope to understand more of Arma’s past in future books. She hints at her training, but I felt like it was a missing link in this book. Thankfully there are 4 more books in this world. 4/5...more
