I've wanted to read this sequel awhile but I just couldn't find it with reasonable price. In the end the eBook was available in my library and I was so happy to finally getting a chance to read it and it was worth the wait!
Casteel could be so frustrating during this book. He never talked about his emotions and this book would've been way less angsty if he didn't keep everything inside him but he also showed how much he cared by his actions. Cas is so protective of Poppy and he'd have let his people insult him but he couldn't let them made her flinch and threaten her, let alone insult her.
Poppy felt like she was mourning Hawke's death. The Hawke she knew didn't exist and while she had trusted him with everything, even his name wasn't real until she found out it was really his second name.
The romance continued to be a slow burn. It could be annoying at times since there was pretty much zero communication unless Poppy was curious about random things. At the same time I lived for Poppy starting to trust Casteel again and how we got little pieces about how he thought she was no only beautiful but also intelligent, unique and brave. Cas is both the hero and the villain. He might feel like a monster but he always let Poppy made her own choices, as long as she wasn't dangering herself.
Kieran is great but I got tired of his little comments about Poppy always having questions. You'd think they would be happy she was asking questions after finding out her whole world was a lie. I did love him basically telling Poppy that she was stupid when she thought Casteel didn't have feelings for her.
I can't believe I have to wait until March for The Crown of Gilded Bones. I could barely stop reading A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire even to work or sleep and that ending just made me eager to keep reading but alas I have to wait. This book was not perfect but I loved every bit of it, even the angsty parts and I couldn't stop thinking about it after it was over. There's still so many questions unanswered....more
