Writing a good sequel to a massive hit book is very difficult, as I've come to realize over the years. But wonderful things happen sometimes and Ready Player Two definitely captures the spirit and magic of its predecessor. Cline took the same concepts from the first book and amped them up further. Everything that made the first novel great -the pop culture references, the heartfelt human experiences, the world of the OASIS- all are present in the sequel. Ready Player Two takes you on a heck of a ride.
So don't let yourself be turned away by others who talked shit about this book just because some people have to find something negative in everything and be outraged about everything they read or see. I, for one, couldn’t put this book down! It was everything I didn't know I needed!...more
Midwinter Murder: Fireside Tales from the Queen of Mystery is a collection of 12 old short stories, all (loosely) happening in winter. Some are more entertaining than others, but altogether none of them delivered anything special to the mystery genre.
Because I am an Agatha Christie newbie and I am only familiar with Poirot, I pretty much only enjoyed the four stories he appeared in. For her true fans though, reading about all these other detectives could be exciting as well....more

This month I decided I would only read Christmas themed books and so far I did well, but after this one right here I am officially done. It's not that it was bad per se, but it wasn't great either. Full of clichés, silly and immature characters and surprisingly, not christmasy enough.
There are three different stories in The Reindeer Falls Collection and each focuses on one Winter sister. The first story was the one that convinced me to pick it up, because part of it takes place in the city I currently live in (Nuremberg, Germany). On one hand, it was really nice to read about places I've known my whole life and places I see almost every day. But on the other hand, there was some weird stuff happening, like for example there's a scene where the MC, Holly Winter, gets fingered on a church balcony, by none other than her boss ...more

I really liked the idea - Kate is a single 34 year old gal, who lets a friend sign her up for a dating agency that promises to find her love before Christmas. And so the 12 dates of Christmas begin.

All is nice and well so far. But as Kate goes on these dates, I found myself more and more annoyed, because all guys are incredibly attractive, smart and successful - which on one hand is highly unlikely to actually happen, because come on, really? To quote Brad Mondo: "In what galaxy on Earth??" ...more

I've only ever read one other book from Joe Hill (Heart-Shaped Box) and I am already noticing something about his writing that I do not like. His villains seem to be... idk, silly? And unbelievable as evil. The ghost in Heart Shaped Box was straight up ridiculous and laughable and in NOS4R2, Charlie Manx was as scary as a villain from Scooby Doo, to be honest. I couldn't take him seriously at all.
I was more creeped out by Bing and not only creeped out, I also had some other issues with him. This is something that never really bothers me in other stories, but here I was so annoyed with the weird way Joe chose to depict him - as this strange man with fucked up mommy issues who would talk so badly about women and his sexual fantasies with them. Just... yuck.
All that aside, though, I still enjoyed the story and I'm looking forward to seeing how amc ruined the TV show adaptation ...more

This book is such a weird combination of western, fantasy, magic and paranormal and it absolutely took me by surprise. I'm not the biggest fan of the Western trend at all - the whole horses, saloon and gunslinger scene is not usually my jam. But I did, however, love the shift toward the Middle East. It's refreshing to actually read a book that is not set in the US for once.
The thing I enjoyed the most, though, was the fact that despite being YA, it didn't feel too YA. So extra points for that!

I am so hot and bothered by this book. [image]
I want to start off by saying that I hardly ever get triggered by anything in either books, movies or TV shows. I don't go crazy if I read something about men not acting properly, or if there is a hint of any type of "-ism" or "phobia". If I feel like there's something wrong in a story, I will give it a low rating or eventually DNF it/stop watching. I don't often rant or boycott writers for telling the story they want.
But this book, oof, it got on my nerve from start to finish. I don't even know how to begin this review ...more
