Ne parla oggi Francesco Costa a Morning (e niente, più lo ascolto, più mi piace e meno condivido i suoi entusiasmi per alcune letture, della serie che nessuno è perfetto) e mi ricordo di non averlo mai aggiunto tra le mie letture.
Questa la mia sintesi:
Cercare un posto nel mondo e trovarlo nel posto sbagliato: noia, soprattutto, poi anche assenza totale di esempi, di adulti da prendere come modello, incapacità di analizzare, sia pure con i limiti dell’età, la Storia e le letture affrontate per crearsi un’opinione, un background culturale e sociale. E poi ancora l’incapacità di infondere alcun tipo di sentimento nella propria esistenza, che più che essere mossa da una passione, anche quando criticabile, sembra essere il risultato di una forma di apatia esistenziale che sfocia nel nichilismo. Questo il contenuto, sulla forma posso dire che non mi è piaciuta affatto, che ho trovato la scrittura di Coppo molto approssimativa, a tratti pretenziosa nel tentare, con molta vaghezza, di riuscire a essere letteraria.
Due stelle e mezza.
Questi i miei appunti durante la lettura in corso:
Sono curiosa, in questi ultimi tempi, ahimè, si parla tanto, troppo, di fascismo, di neofascismo, di onda nera, di avanzata delle destre, così sono curiosa di capire meglio cosa possa spingere in quest’epoca un ragazzo o una ragazza in quella direzione. Ho le mie idee in proposito, certo, ma sono soprattutto tarate su Roma, la mia città, e formate sull’esperienza personale: sono nata e cresciuta in una zona che negli anni Ottanta, anni in cui si moriva a causa dello schieramento politico o del proprio impegno, era definita nera (il famoso QT, quartiere Trieste, di Edoardo Albinati e delLa scuola cattolica). Questa la mia premessa, unita alla lettura recente del libro in cui Valentina Mira parla del “suo fascista” tra le righe, raccontando invece della morte di Mario Scrocca in conseguenza all’accusa (poi caduta) di essere uno dei responsabili di Acca Larenzia, che mi aveva convinta, ma lasciata con la curiosità di saperne di più.* E dunque, l’ho iniziato con moderato entusiasmo e con curiosità, che invece, purtroppo, si sono spente piuttosto in fretta per due motivi: la scrittura, per me veramente ai minimi termini ma con pretese creative (periodi in cui si fatica a capire cosa voglia dire con metafore similitudini inutili e costruzione del periodo che sembra il calco di altre lingue tanto sono contorti - e un personaggio che si capisce fatichi a fare chiarezza in se stesso (e va bene, è un adolescente, un ragazzino, all’inizio, ma poi cresce e allora l’autore dovrebbe decidere se a narrare sia l’adulto o il ragazzo), nonostante si voglia dimostrare la sua sicurezza nella scelta di essere un fascista che non si accontenta di far parte di una sezione di nuova destra, ma vuole andare in giro a picchiare e a fare casino alle manifestazioni. Ma è noioso, da morire, noioso in questa forma di indolenza e apatia che sembra contrastare ed essere l’opposto di quello che dice di voler fare, essere, desiderare, fino quasi a mostrarci un nichilista che irrita, che verrebbe voglia di prendere a schiaffi più per questo che per le sue pseudo scelte politiche. Molte tematiche abbracciate e strumentalizzate dall’estrema destra le riconosco: Bobby Sands e l’Irlanda del Nord, soprattutto, mentre fatico a comprendere (dal loro punto di vista) la condanna al colonialismo inglese viste le mire espansionistiche e coloniali di Mussolini in Africa. Il mio no, dunque, non è per motivi ideologici, che pure ci sono, ma per la scrittura e per la costruzione di un personaggio (in parte autobiografico, mi è sembrato di capire) che non compie alcuna evoluzione, che non induce ad alcun tipo di riflessione o tentativo di comprensione.
*Nel frattempo ho letto anche l’altro romanzo di Valentina Mira (si tratta di X, mentre quello di cui parlo è Dalla stessa parte mi troverai) in cui approfondisce ulteriormente l’argomento, e anche Quello che serve di notte dello scrittore francese Laurent Petitmangin: ecco, tutt’altro spessore, molto più utili e interessanti sull’argomento, tutt’altra scrittura (quella di Mira so che a molti non piace, mentre quella di Petitmangin è ineccepibile.

Interessante la voce di questa autrice canadese di origine egiziana (nata a Philadelphia e cresciuta a Dubai, tanto per spiegare il respiro internazionale che trasmettono le sue parole), così come è interessante la struttura del romanzo che mette a confronto una giovane americana di seconda generazione figlia di immigrati (in cui si riflette l’autrice in maniera via via sempre più evidente) che si trasferisce al Cairo per riscoprire le sue radici, e un giovane egiziano con problemi di tossicodipendenza proveniente da un villaggio povero vicino ad Alessandria - il ragazzo di Shobrakheit - che è sopravvissuto alla rivoluzione. La contrapposizione delle due storie corrisponde a quella dei due mondi di provenienza, puntellata e sottolineata da domande filosofiche, nella prima parte, e da brevi incisi e note che spiegano cultura, usi, detti e proverbi egiziani nella seconda, diventa sempre più evidente dal momento in cui i due protagonisti si incontrano, si scontrano e si dividono, momenti in cui a confrontarsi, a scontrarsi e a dividere sono anche il vecchio e il nuovo mondo, l’universo femminile e quello maschile, il patriarcato e il femminismo, in un continuo interrogarsi su identità, appartenenza, prevaricazione, potere. Sempre interessante, ma meno riuscito nell’economia del romanzo, l’esperimento metanarrativo di cui l’autrice decide di fare uso nella terza parte, sparigliando le carte e lasciando in sospeso ogni tentativo di resa dei conti.
Grazie a Internazionale anche per questa segnalazione: non è la prima volta che seguo i consigli di una delle newsletter che seguo dedicate alle aree geografiche e finora non sono mai state letture banali, sempre utili per conoscere e confrontarsi con aree del mondo meno frequentate sia geograficamente che in letteratura. Tutto è Nakba, per chi l’ha vissuta e per chi non c’era, per chi è rimasto e per chi se n’è andato; per chi è nato dopo e ne ha respirato, assimilato per osmosi l’assenza di quello che era prima, il dolore del durante, la resezione delle proprie radici, la privazione della propria terra, l’appropriazione della propria esistenza, la scomparsa del proprio futuro. Cosa succederebbe se un giorno i palestinesi scomparissero da Israele, dalla Cisgiordania, dalla Striscia di Gaza? Cosa accadrebbe se senza fare rumore, all’improvviso, sparissero tutti? Non è un romanzo in cui trovare risposte questo, che inizia in un momento dolente, la morte della nonna di Alaa a Jaffa, terra di frutteti e di aranceti da cui, dal quartiere ghetto dove i palestinesi che non scapparono furono spinti nel 1948 e relegati, si guarda in lontananza quella menzogna storica e urbanistica che si chiama Tel Aviv - la città bianca, che sorge sulle vestigia dell’antica cittadina palestinese - si illumina di mistero e improvviso silenzio nel momento in cui Ariel, giornalista ebreo suo amico, si accorge e inizia allarmato a testimoniare la scomparsa di autisti, operai, cuochi, commesse, carcerati, assimilati e non, donne, uomini e bambini provenienti dai checkpoint o inseriti nel tessuto sociale israeliano, tutti assenti e irreperibili nello stesso momento e nello spazio di una notte - e finisce per riscoprirsi a sua volta rapace in una città che rapace lo era già stata alle sue origini inglobando, appropriandosi, sostituendosi a chi in quei luoghi e in quelle abitazioni era nato, aveva costruito, aveva vissuto prima di loro, prima di lui. Mi appresto a finire questo che è un romanzo denso, magmatico, di quelli in cui si entra con facilità ma si resta dentro ad aggirarsi con fatica, storditi e travolti dalla bellezza, e altrettanto con difficoltà si pensa di riuscire a trovarne l’uscita: non si desidera trovarne l’uscita, persi, forse, in quel sottosuolo ricco di storie, di fascino, di vite passate sopra il quale pulsa una realtà disordinata, incomprensibile, inafferabile, o travolti dagli ori e dagli stucchi del barocco delle chiese che contrastano le abitazioni di tufo e i vicoli che si arrampicano verso Capodimonte.

Posso già trarre le mie conclusioni, dunque, perché la storia inizia dalla fine - fine della quale non sapevo nulla quando ho visto il film, magnifico, di Mario Martone con le interpretazioni superlative di Pierfrancesco Favino, Tommaso Ragno e Francesco Di Leva (senza dimenticare gli intensi occhi che non vedono di Aurora Quattrocchi) - perché il film il finale non te lo svela subito, e in questo gioco di ribaltamenti tra romanzo e film, fra disvelamenti e rivelazioni, ritorni e nostalgia a un vissuto che è stato diverso da quello che poteva essere, di tentativo di imprimere a una vita vissuta per quarantacinque anni altrove il marchio delle origini, e la pace che, finalmente, Rea mi regala con Napoli, per me città verso cui nutro odio e amore, ma origine di parte della mia famiglia, posso dire di aver finalmente incontrato un autore che non immaginavo potesse essere quello che si è rivelato: imperdibile, dal respiro lento e dai contenuti ricchi di storia (anche dell’arte) e di impegno civile e sociale in cui il fluire dei pensieri e delle cose sono più importanti di quelle azioni che li determinano, ma anche colui che mi ha preso per mano e portata alla Sanità, nelle viscere di Napoli, nel ventre di Napoli, regalato il desiderio di tornare a Napoli, anche io. Quattro stelle e mezza.

Tre stelline sembrerebbero indicare una lettura deludente, mentre in realtà manca sempre quella mezza stella (in più) che indicherebbe, con maggior precisione, che questa lettura non mi ha convinta fino in fondo, è vero, nonostante ci siano storie molto belle e passaggi più riusciti di altri, ma ha avuto il pregio di avermi spinta a leggere quasi in contemporanea Tributo alla terra di Joe Sacco (in cui i protagonisti sono i Dene dei Territori del Nordovest canadese, ma gli abusi perpetrati ai danni dei nativi del continente canadese sembrano non seguire affatto i confini della geografia politica, ma essere mossi da un’unica mano criminale che ha colpito in tutto il continente senza distinzione alcuna tra Stati Uniti e Canada), a riprendere la visione delle ultime due stagioni di Reservation Dogs, che rimandavo già da un po’, e convinta nella scelta di voler leggere anche Non qui, non altrove, l’opera precedente di Tommy Orange che fu candidata anche per il premio Pulitzer nel 2019 e da molti considerata migliore di questa, in cui alcuni personaggi precedono nella storia e nelle generazioni le vicende di questo libro.

Se all’apparenza Stelle vaganti può sembrare un romanzo in cui a essere protagonista è la generazione di nativi della famiglia di Jude Star, il capostipite scampato al massacro del Sand Creek, e quindi una saga familiare attraverso le storie dei suoi discendenti che arriva fino ai giorni nostri, è anche vero che più che la famiglia a essere centrali sono il senso di disorientamento e il dolore, che provocato dall’essere stati strappati alla propria vita e alla propria terra, reclusi e brutalizzati, o mai integrati in una società che dopo averne estirpato le radici con la violenza attraverso un programma di colonizzazione territoriale e di annullamento identitario, ha infine emarginato, escluso da quell’integrazione che prometteva, marginalizzato relegando al ruolo di cittadini di minor valore e con meno diritti le ultime generazioni di nativi, ha fatto sì che quel dolore crescesse sordo e inascoltato - a volte anche non del tutto compreso perché non c’è stato in molti casi un vero e proprio passaggio di testimone, né una condivisione delle violenze subite tra genitori e figli - da una generazione all’altra abbandonata all’alcol e alla droga, alla disoccupazione, all’indigenza.

Per tutta la lettura, poi, ho pensato che “Aggiustare l’universo” potrebbe essere gemellato con Tutta la luce che non vediamo di Anthony Doerr (vincitore del Premio Pulitzer per la fiction nel 2015) e che Raffaella Romagnolo, come la sua protagonista, la giovane maestra elementare Gilla, avesse congegnato un bel meccanismo narrativo in cui diversi piani temporali e diverse narrazioni si incastrano alla perfezione ai riferimenti storici, alle leggi razziali e ai titoli dei giornali che scandiscono in tempo reale le vicende dei personaggi regalando a loro profondità e tangibilità e a noi quel senso di ineluttabilità, sgomento, di corsa inarrestabile verso il precipizio della Storia. La storia principale si svolge nel primo anno scolastico del 1945-1946, subito dopo la fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, ma ritorna spesso a vicende che si svolgono nel 1938 e negli anni della guerra, e Romagnolo è brava nel creare un suo sistema solare fra Casale Monferrato, Borgo di Dentro (paesino dell’entroterra ligure che, insieme ad alcuni personaggi, ho visto presenti in almeno un altro dei suoi romanzi*), Genova e Auschwitz in cui muovere in tempo di pace e di guerra, nelle città e nelle campagne, i bambini e gli animali, i fascisti e i partigiani, gli ebrei e i cattolici, chi ha distrutto e chi si è dato da fare per salvare e poi per ricostruire. A partire dalla Scuola, che è dove Gilla, che di anni ne ha ventidue e un passato recente da staffetta, decide di azionare il meccanismo per farlo ripartire, che è il luogo dove tutto può essere e deve essere rifondato. Non senza aver sofferto, non senza che nel libro la sofferenza venga risparmiata, nascosta o annegata nel miele (che sono alcune delle critiche che ho visto muovere a questo romanzo), o che tutti i protagonisti della storia ne siano rimasti immuni riprendendo senza perdite il corso della propria esistenza: che dire, anche nelle tragedie qualcuno riesce a uscirne vivo, qualcuno può e deve continuare, qualcun altro riesce a sopravvivere, altri ancora possono ricominciare a vivere e rinascere.

Credo abbia vissuto, anche in questi dodici anni che sono trascorsi da allora, anche durante la sua battaglia a Cancerland: le parole di Joubert le scrive la stessa Siri Hustvedt, moglie e scrittrice di Auster, nel suo post di ieri su Instagram, citandole fra le parole che Auster stesso le avrebbe rivolto negli ultimi tempi. "È morto amabile", conclude, e non fatico a crederlo, perché lo stesso Baumgarten, che forse condivide con Paul Auster più di qualche tratto autobiografico, lo è stato, amabile, e la levità e la grazia del suo personaggio, la sottile e delicata ironia, le porterò a lungo con me....more
