This may be a really weird comparison, but I found Origin to remind me of Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty. In Truly Madly Guilty, something horrible happened at a neighbourhood barbecue. The reader spends the majority of the novel wondering what this event was, that when the reveal finally happens, 200 pages later, it isn't nearly as bad as what you imagined.
With Origin it's almost worse because you have to wait almost 400 pages to learn what announcement will change the world of science and religion forever. I was more concerned that Langdon didn't give much thought about if the announcement should go live since it was the cause of numerous deaths and what the impact of the announcement would be.
I was disappointment that there wasn't as much puzzle solving as in past novels. There was one big puzzle, the password, and some smaller puzzles, but I would of preferred more of a treasure hunt.
The reveals were a bit disappointing. I wish there was more time spend on certain actions instead of the subplots (King/Prince storyline).

Andy is struggling in his love life Not the best novel in the Andy Carpenter series, but it still delivered on a great mystery and some funny moments.
Andy is struggling in his love life after his girlfriend left him. One day, he sees her on tv after 2 college students were killed in her town. She calls him and wants him to defend the guy that she just arrested. Andy drops everything and goes to Wisconsin to defend the young man.
I did like the change in scenery from NYC to Wisconsin and how Andy had to adjust to life in a small town. I wasn't a huge fan of Laurie and felt like she was using Andy a lot.
I think my biggest problem with the book was that there was hardly any courtroom scenes and it was more about Andy investigating on his own, instead of defending someone in court. I really missed those scenes and watching the courtroom drama unfold. Andy is a better lawyer than investigator.
The mystery was excellent and I was totally fooled on who the killer was. There was also some deaths that I didn't see coming at all! ...more

I clearly missed something because I'm in the low minority of those that just found the book to be ok.
Homegoing is divided into chapters that go into detail about the life of the descendants of 2 step sisters from Ghana. The family divides, Effia's side still living in Africa, whereas the other side (Esi's) goes to America.
The family tree at the beginning of the novel is very useful, however it does spoil what is going to happen. Before I even start the chapter, I know who the lead character will marry and how many children they will have. I found that it took away from each chapter.
I also found that the stories didn't go into enough details. I would be getting into the story and then all of a sudden it would end and we never get back to that character. It was hard to connect to a character that only had 20 pages of story. ...more

A bomb goes off in a wealthy factory owner's office, killing him instantly. Malloy gets handpicked for this case and of course Sarah is going to help him. My favourite part of the book was how Sarah and her mother went into the bad areas of town to question witnesses. Sarah's mom is now one of my main characters in the series (now we know where Sarah gets it from)!
The mystery was much better than the last novel and I didn't see the ending coming at all. I really enjoyed this one!

I love the concept of having a male and female author co-write a short story with their main characters meeting and solving a crime together. I also enjoyed how there was a little blurb at the start of each chapter about why Lee Child paired them up and how the authors came up with the concept.
We only listened to 3 out of the 11 short stories and wasn't overly impressed with them. I found there was too much of the main characters discussing and not enough action during the stories. Again I probably would of preferred reading the novel instead of listening. ...more

It is now 20 years after, Kersti's best friend, Cressida fell from their boarding school window. It was ruled as a suicide attempt, however Kersti now believes that it may have been intentional. She heads off to find what may of happened to Cressida 20 years ago and it soon becomes clear that someone doesn't want her digging around in the past.
I normally don't get too grossed out during mysteries, however this book left me feeling unsettled by the end. I was surprised by the ending and didn't guess what was going to happen at all! I enjoyed that the book was a quick read and I liked the alternating chapters between present day and when Kersti was at school.
Side note: even though this had nothing to do with the mystery, I was really grossed out when (view spoiler)[Kersti used Cressida's eggs to have her own babies. I felt that there was an unhealthy relationship with Kersti and Cressida. (hide spoiler)]...more

I enjoyed the first two novels, but they were just ok reads to me. This book has changed the series for me, I really like the two female leads and the mystery was excellent!
2 nuns are found brutally attacked. One is dead and the other is very injured and lies in a coma. Once Isles does an autopsy on the young nun, she finds something shocking, the nun had recently given birth. Who is the father? And why would someone go after the nuns?
I really enjoyed the mystery as well as getting a bit more insight into the 2 leads. We learn more about Isles (the previous novels focused on Rizzoli) and both of their personal lives have progressed. I'm excited to read more in the series!

25 years ago, Cynthia woke up one morning, and her family was gone. The beds were made, the house was empty and they never returned. In the present day, Cynthia is now married and has a daughter, but she still can't get out of her mind, what happened to her family.
My first problem with the book, was that it was told from Cynthia's husband's view. I didn't like that. I didn't feel that I understood who Cynthia was and I would of preferred to hear her thoughts.
I wasn't impressed with the conclusion, what happened to the family. I felt that it was under whelming and the book was tied up super nicely that it was unbelievable. ...more

Joni, Deb, Eden, and Trina have been best friends since high school. Now 15ish years later, Joni feels that the foursome isn't as close as they use to be and suggest that they all write letters revealing their secrets. It starts off as pretty harmless, but Joni then finds a 5th letter that could threaten everyone's friendship.
I enjoyed how there was a bit of mystery through into the novel. Of course, there was the big mystery, who wrote the 5th letter? But also, it was fun to guess which letter belonged to who. I was surprised by the person who wrote the 5th letter and it made for a fun reveal.
This is a book that you can easily get hooked onto and just keep wanting to read one more chapter......more

There are some great strengths in the series. I enjoy how the villains are written and that the readers get a bit inside of their lives and understand why they kill. I also like how Jesse Stone and his team track down the killers.
The only other negative is that I found that the killer couple was revealed a bit too early on, I would liked some more time guessing on who the killers are. ...more

I've been seeing so many amazing reviews for this book and it took me a bit to take a chance and read it. I wasn't sure how I would like it, but right from the opening chapters I was hooked right away. I couldn't put the novel down and after 3 sittings I was finished.
This novel is so much more than a fictional celebrity biography. I loved how the author added in some mystery on why Evelyn Hugo choose Monique (an unknown reporter) to write about her tell-all life story. I loved how the author told the story and wrapped it up perfectly. I was awake for another hour after I finished the book just going everything that had happened.
It looks like I jumped into the middle of a series, but you can easily read this novel as a standalone.
In Virtue Falls, there are a number of murders It looks like I jumped into the middle of a series, but you can easily read this novel as a standalone.
In Virtue Falls, there are a number of murders occurring, which is very unusual for this small town. The small police team is in over their heads and unfortunately they just keep coming. Merida arrives in the small town, ready to escape from her previous lives. What makes Merida unique is that she is mute. She can hear, but can't speak herself and has to use sign language or her tablet to communicate. Does Merida arriving into town have anything to do with the gruesome murders?
There was a lot going on in this novel. You had the new police sheriff as well as Merida and her secretive past lives. At times the plot did feel unbelievable, especially with so many people that could sign. But the mystery was enjoyable and I was surprised by the plot twist on who the killer was.
I didn't enjoy the "supernatural" powers that the sheriff had. I found that it took away from the story line and just left me feeling super confused on what was happening.
Overall a good read, but wasn't great enough that I want to go back and continue reading the rest of the series. ...more

At the end of the last book, Erika got sent away as she didn't agree with her rival getting a promotion in the police department. In the start of this book, we got to see her working with her new team as they try to take down one of the big drug dealers. When they uncover drugs in a river, they also find a body of a girl that has been missing for 26 years and is one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in Britain. Erika really wants this case and she puts together a team, that consists of her new and old team, to solve the murder of Jessica Collins.
I really like Erika and her team. In this novel, besides the kick ass mystery, Erika takes a big step forward in her person life after the death of her husband a few years ago.
The mystery was so good! There was so many pieces, including the lead detective (Amanda Baker) on the case 26 years ago that was focused to retire early and is now a drunk. After the discovery of the body, Amanda now has to sober up and wants to solve the case. The Collins are a crazy family that has many secrets of their own, that they want to stay covered. This is also a cold case, so there are no new pieces of evidence for Erika and team to uncover.

My borrowed copy of the novel doesn't have a cover page, so I was going into the novel blind. I only knew that the title was The Passenger. I was thinking that book was maybe about plane crash passengers since there was a bunch of women's names in the Table of Contents. So imagine my surprise when I read the opening line:
In case you were wondering, I didn’t do it. I didn’t have anything to do with Frank’s death. I don’t have an alibi, so you’ll have to take my word for it...
What an opener!
I did enjoy reading the novel and I had never read a book about so many multiple identities. I did find myself getting bored towards the end of the novel because I was just ready for the big reveal and to find out what had happened originally. Like others have mentioned, the reveal wasn't too surprising or shocking, but it was still an entertaining, hard to put down read getting to the end....more

ThankfulAfter the last Myron Bolitar novel (book #5), I found it to be a bit disappointing. I was worried that the series would start to go downhill. Thankfully this novel (book #6) has all the charm as the previous novels, with a great mystery that I didn't see coming!
Myron is nursing a broken heart and has escaped to go to the Caribbean, not telling anyone where he went. Win manages to track him down and gives Myron the bad news...Esperanza (Myron's business partner) has been arrested for killing one of their clients.
I really enjoyed this novel. There was some other story lines going on at the same time (a missing person and drug dealers that want to kill Myron) and everything came together nicely at the end. Although I could of lived without the drug dealers/mob members that were a continuation from the previous novel.
I love the back and forth wittiness between Myron and Win and how they have each other's backs. I also liked how we got to know more of Big Cindi and how she is coming to be apart of the team. ...more

Ellie was in the police force as a criminalist until one case became too many and she became a professor at the local collage. One day, she and another professor stumble upon a student's body at a facility that the university had just purchased. The police department hires Ellie as a consultant.
I liked how Ellie was a criminalist, since I don't read too many books that involve forensic sciences. However it seemed that Ellie did a few forensic tests, but mostly just was a ride along with the police detective.
Ellie is like Juliet in Fardig's Java Jiva series and I like the hot tempered female main character.
The mystery was so, so and did remind me of a cozy mystery. I saw the killer early on, but didn't know the reasons why until later.
