A humorous, ingenious and wide-ranging book about cognitive theory, artificial intelligence, and mathematical logic, illustrated by concepts from art A humorous, ingenious and wide-ranging book about cognitive theory, artificial intelligence, and mathematical logic, illustrated by concepts from art (Escher) and music (Bach), with excursions through molecular biology, quantum physics, Zen Buddhism (which I could have done without) and other disciplines. I learned many things from the book, but mainly it was just fun to read.
In some respects the book is outdated, not only in its central area of concern (AI and related areas of computer science) but also in areas of everyday life; I wonder what a brilliant high school student (which he implies is the target audience, but I think it would have to be a very brilliant one) would make of his many analogies to records and record-players.
I've always loved Bach but this book has inspired me to read up on Escher and G��del, which I suppose is the goal; and to add his later books to my TBR pile....more
