I wanted a dark good read and therefore decided to pick this because I knew it would be one and that I would like it (because I really enjoyed the"Endgame" series by this author).
This was a good book but I did have problems with it. I didn't rate it higher because a lot of things annoyed me about it and I thought the story was somewhat similar to the other series which Damon is in and the overall story seemed too farfetched to me. It also started off somewhat slow and there was a lot of boring aspects.
However, it was an easy read in the way that it kept me interested enough to finish this book in one sitting and by the end, I did really enjoy it.
Characterwise, I didn't hate Damon and he made me laugh on occasion and I actually really liked Penny. I'm not a fan of the age difference between them (and her being a child) but at least their relationship wasn't sexual.
I do want to start the final book in this duet as soon as possible.

This book was so much different than what I thought it was going to be like and I'm not sure if that's a good thing. I read this book with a pain in my chest throughout but it was gone by the end.
I didn't like Troy at first but as I read on, I ended up really, really liking him. But then I really liked Hafez too. My heart broke for Hafez in so many ways.
I kept thinking how is this going to end? I wanted to finish this book as soon as possible but I prolonged it because, at the same time, I didn't want to finish it -I was scared of the ending.
There were a few reoccurring themes throughout this book, the main one for me is the different shades of red mentioned and I think that one started to annoy me until I got over it.
While reading this book I kept thinking I wish I never had. But now that I've finished it, I'm happy for the experience of reading this story.
No one cares if, after a storm, they’re washed ashore naked. Only that they are alive. -I love this quote because I totally understand the meaning behind it.

I loved all the references to Chess in all three books -really clever
This was a strange book to read It had an almost pulling feel when you read it. Like it was making you read it and want to read it. It literally pulls you in. It’s a dark story. Maybe that’s why I liked it so much. But I know it’s not a story for everyone
It's a weird feeling, I normally love talking and explaining about books but these seem harder to explain. I feel like I can't justify the story by telling you about it- you have to read to understand.
There was slight humour in this book that did make me laugh.
The sex scenes were a little too much for me like in the others in this series but the story was too intriguing to stop me from reading it.
My feelings for Gabriel were a contradiction. One minute I liked him and the next, I hated him. One second Gabriel is telling his secrets and I think: Oh my god, Gabriel! And the next I thought: Asshole. However, I thoroughly enjoyed Avery’s comebacks -She gave as good as she got. I did roll my eyes a few times at Gabriel - he was so freaking possessive and if you think about it a bit of a creep - the way he watched and wanted her for so long: “You’re sick,” I hiss. “Yes,” he says, reaching for me. “Sick. Deranged. Fucked in the head.”
When Gabriel was in one of his moods where he was just horrible to her and Avery said to him "I don’t like you when you’re like this.” - I couldn't agree more But he did win my affection by the end, I somewhat understood his reasoning. "I don't want to die for you, ... Let me live for you." - okay this was pretty sweet
I did still have a few questions towards the end though.
