I really enjoyed watching the romance blossom between Isabel and Shane. Isabel was just what Shane needed in order to realize he needed more than work in his life. And their interactions were fun and romantic. As for Teresa and Liam, well, I just want to shake these two. However, Teresa did have an epiphany where Liam was concerned and it did make his behavior more understandable even if I still want to shake him. ;)

Taken by Storm is the second installment in the Dynasties: Secrets of the A-List series - a collection of stories each told by a different author. CSchield is a new-to-me author and I was eager to "meet" her as well as continue the story which began in Tempted by Scandal.
Taken by Storm not only continued the overall story, but continued Liam and Teresa's story as well as delivering the romance between Isabel and Shane. I truly enjoyed watching Isabel and Shane's romance blossom.
Isabel is the epitome of a romantic. Her job at The Opulence Hotel as the romance concierge capitalizes on those traits. She's sweet and hard-working but she also has a bite. I admired that she wouldn't allow herself to be walked on. Shane is rather a workaholic. He doesn't believe in love or romance and even if he did, he wouldn't have time for it. So of course it was fun seeing Isabel, who's had a crush on him forever, change his mind.
The drama between Teresa and Liam continued in much the same way it started. Liam still can't seem to trust Teresa and his back-and-forth, push-and-pull not only annoyed Teresa. It annoyed me as well. Even the epiphany I had concerning his behavior is wearing thin as an excuse. The author who finishes their story has a tough row to hoe in making me want Teresa to forgive him and wish for his HEA.
I really am liking this series overall and how it's being told. I've never read a story written in this way but these author's style - well, Booth's and Schield's anyway - flow well together. Taken by Storm was engaging and well-paced. I'm eager to read the next installment.
*I received an eARC from the author. This did not affect my rating and my review is provided voluntarily.*

Passion Rising was honestly the perfect ending for this series as well as the perfect way to wrap up Huss & McClain's first foray into being writing partners.
Passion Rising did a one-eighty and went from being more action to more...cerebral. And that wasn't a bad thing. At least not for me. It made me stop and think - really examine the story as a whole. And I appreciated that. Maddie and Tyler have been through so much in their young lives. Things that would have broken lesser individuals. But while they were both damaged, the each continued getting up each day, putting one foot in front of the other because they felt there had to be something more. They've been through quite a lot since they reconnected as well. They were both in very dark places and I don't know why they had to experience even more "bad" together except to say that it couldn't have worked in any other way. They've endured tragedy before but in experiencing it together they realized that together is better...or at least makes handling it easier. And in each other - or maybe simply with each other - they found what they needed to fill in the cracks of their damaged selves and they maybe, just might have found purpose...which is something I think we all long for.
See? Cerebral. But don't worry. It wasn't all contemplating life's purpose, love, etc. There was an injection of suspense as well as plenty of steam. But again, Passion Rising made me take a stap back and look at the entire picture of Maddie and Tyler's story...put all the pieces together...and I was just pleased as punch with how it all came together.
As a sort of an aside, going into this book as a longtime fan of Huss, I think I had certain preconceived notions of what I'd get from this series despite her partnering with McClain. Passion Rising pushed home the point that this series is not a Huss book, it's a Huss-McClain book and therefore I got something a little different. And I must admit to enjoying the experience. I look forward to seeing what these two come up with next.

To say I'd been anxiously awaiting the release of Angel of Shadow is an understatement. Wormwood made such an impression I couldn't wait to see what Kali and Tiamat did next. But wait I did. And fortunately, Angel of Shadow was worth the wait!
~Characters Of course, Kali and Tiamat are the central characters of the story but Nevins also further developed characters we'd previously met as well as weaving in some new ones. All the characters, particularly a demon named Richard, added complexity to the story overall as well as creating tension, suspense, and providing comic relief. I'm a fan of character growth and watching Kali in particular grow, change, and mature was a pleasure.
~Action/Suspense/Gritty Setting Angel of Shadow didn't skimp on action or suspense. Now that the Nephilim are split and no one is quite certain what the new mission is, I waited and watched with bated breath to see what was going to happen. Also, a revelation concerning Kali had me biting my nails as the repercussions slowly revealed themselves. And of course Richard had to keep stirring things up for all involved. Nevins adeptly paints a post-apocalyptic landscape. I could almost taste the dust and ash, feel the crunch of dirt and small pebbles being walked on, feel the oppressive darkness of the caves. And the battle scenes had me gasping for air.
~Thought-provoking Elements Nevins had Kali, Tiamat, and others dealing with accepting new roles as well as accepting themselves when new characteristics/traits were realized. It was interesting and exciting to witness characters learning to deal when things went against long-held beliefs, when they reached deep and found inner strength they didn't realize was there, and try to understand that genetics don't make a person, it's the choices the person makes and the actions they take that make them who they are. Kali and Tiamat are also exploring love - what it means to love and be loved.
All this was delivered in Nevins' beautiful prose.
The future is uncertain for Kali, Tiamat, and their friends. Whatever comes, they'll face it together. I'm eager to see where things go from here.

And Teresa and Liam's story continued in a way that left me rooting for them rather than wanting to beat my head against a wall. This was my first time reading RRyan and I'll certainly be picking up her other books. :)
========== Seduced by Second Chances was the best of the series so far! Jessie and Gideon's story was compelling and RRyan's continuation of Teresa and Liam's story had me rooting for them rather than wanting to bang my head against a wall. RRyan is a new-to-me author and I enjoyed her storytelling so much I one-clicked a few titles from her back list. ;)
Highlights
*Characters Yay for diversity! Jessie and Gideon knew each other as teens. See, he dated Jessie's older sister. But Jessie always harbored a strong crush. But even when there was nothing in their way, there was something in their way. All these years later, they haven't been able to forget one another. Cheers to second chances! Jessie is from a wealthy family while Gideon is from the wrong side of the tracks. They're both successful now - Jessie, a singer/songwriter, and Gideon a billionaire real estate broker. And as they get reacquainted, we see how they've grown and fit even better now. As for Teresa and Liam - their relationship which has been a lot of starts, stops, and stutters, seems to be a little more solid. There were, of course, some fiascos but Liam is being a stand-up guy rather than running and that was a welcome change. There were also hints and reveals about the who behind all of Teresa's trouble. And I'm eager to see how things to in the end.
*Plot RRyan deftly wove a gripping story for Jessie and Gideon. The circumstances for the meeting again, their history, and their present situations, all felt genuine and believable. The pacing was also done well. It didn't feel rushed. The direction RRyan took Teresa and Liam was a relief and as I said, has me hoping for their HEA rather than wishing I could throttle Liam.
*Romance This is a little redundant since romance was the main theme of the plot, but it was so well done it begged repeating. ;)

Wow! Did I enjoy The Rachel Incident? Why yes, yes I did. There was so much to enjoy with its engaging characters, fascination setting, and entertaining storytelling.
Rachel is a student when we first meet her. She's earning her degree in English and working in a bookstore in Cork. It's ~ 2010 and the Irish economy is suffereing as it was everywhere at that time. When she meets her new co-worker, James, she's immediately smitten despite the fact James sets off her gaydar. James, however, insists he's straight and they soon become roommates and the best of friends.
The story is told in two timelines - the present, where Rachel is married, pregnant, and working as a writer, and the past, where she, James, Dr. Byrne (Rachel's professtor), along with a few others, and they're just trying to find their way, their place in the world.
James was funny, brash, and I understood exactly why Rachel was so enamored with him. He was a bright spot in the crappy world of Cork. Carey (AKA James #2) made me smile and laugh and wonder at how a person could live as he did - pure bohemian. I appreciated how CO'Donoghue converyed his character growth. Then there was Deenie and Dr. Byrne and the whole incident that occurred over the course of a year, changing the course of the lives of everyone involved.
The Rachel Incident was charming and well written. CO'Donoghue is an author to watch!...more

"Even the vilest of monsters deserve to be loved." -London
That quote pretty much sets the stage for the finale of London and Grayson's story. Do we really believe that everyone deserves love?
TWolfe dove into the minds of a killer, a criminal psychologist, and two law enforcement officers - I can't imagine the research she did for this story - and delivered a tantalizing, thought-provoking, mindf*ck of a story that couldn't have been a more perfect ending for London and Grayson.
Highlights:
*Characters London, having experienced the revelations brought to light in Born, Darkly must now learn to accept who she is in light of what she suffered and how it impacted her. And she must also deal with a new revelation about herself. Grayson is so self-aware it's almost scary. However, he's unsure how to deal with the emotions London elicits having never experienced them before. Even Foster and Nelson, the law enforcement officers on Grayson's trail are so well developed that I wanted to crawl inside their heads to figure them out.
*Thought-provoking If the quote didn't already clue you in, this story makes you think. It's still rattling around in my head - things like nature versus nurture and fate. Whether criminals can be rehabilitated. If a killer deserves love.
*Psychologically thrilling TWolfe kept me guessing throughout. I was never certain what either London's or Grayson's next move was going to be. And the moves they made were often perplexing and chilling. There are many things that never would have occurred to me. That London and Grayson were in each other's head so deeply that they could seemingly feel each other's need was mind boggling.
*Romance London and Grayson's romance is so far from conventional that unconventional doesn't cover it. As Grayson said,
"We're inexorable. Inescapable."
"We're connected on some deeper level... Through bars and cages and prisons...in the physical sense and the mind. That's why you could never be expendable to me. You're my match."
Born, Madly rather blew me away. It's a story that will stick with me for a long while as I attempt to puzzle out the how's and why's. I'm still questioning whether I'm smart enough to figure it all out. I knew TWolfe would make this finale worth the wait. She didn't disappoint!

I've loved everything I've read from you so far and they've all had at least a little dark but may I say how thrilled I am that you've gone completely to the dark side? *shudders*
I had the pleasure of reading an ARC of Born, Darkly - and it was a pleasure, in the best of dark and disturbing ways. If you're a fan of getting into the minds of, say, serial killers, go one-click (pre-order) this one RIGHT NOW!
*** Okay, I have to say this wasn't really a shock, even though it was kinda a shock, that Wolfe went psycho...er, psychological thriller full on with Born, Darkly. She took most of the elements I've loved most from With Visions of Red and amp'd them full throttle. If y'all enjoy getting into the mind of a killer...well, one-click this baby RIGHT NOW. (Go ahead, I'll wait.)
In Born, Darkly we get to examine the mind of a killer, the mind of a doctor who enjoys digging around in killers' minds, doctor/patient relationships, and, well, the human condition. Omigosh, y'all! This is dark and lovely...well, mostly. I floved it!
In London, we have this renowned psychologist who's attempting to disengage the part of her practice that deals with criminals. But she agrees to take on one last challenge. She's brilliant really. She knows how to delve into a criminal mind - prides herself on it really - but she may have met her match in Grayson.
Grayson is referred to as The Angel of Maine. While he is a convicted killer, his victims are *not* good people. London is to help him with a new trial in a different state. Grayson's genius level intelligent and right off the bat he had me scratching my head over who had control in his sessions with London. He likes puzzles and he sees the ultimate one in London.
I can't explain what a mind f*ck this story is...in the very best of ways. It really is more of a psychological suspense story than a romance. *gasp* I know! I was hanging by a thread through most of it and it's gonna be a challenge waiting for the conclusion. However, I'm absolutely certain Wolfe will make it worth the wait.

I've loved everything I've read by her which is why I requested The Sweetheart List. So I was surprised to feel like I was missing some connection with some of the characters in the beginning. It was then I realized this was #4 in the Sunrise Cove series and if I'd read the previous books, I wouldn't have had any problems. *rolls eyes at self* My bad.
That said, I adored Harper. I admired her courage in leaving her life behind for a new one in Lake Tahoe, the last place she'd felt happy, to start a bakery. I loved her family recipes and her staunch loyalty for her new friends. I also adored Brodie and all his grumpiness. I appreciated his love for his family and his desire to do right by those he loved. I didn't quite understand the amount of guilt he harbored for a past event but it said much about his character.
And I adored Ivy. Her circumstances and the tenacity it took to overcome them - to learn more about her family and to find her own path at such a young age - was awe-inspiring.
The entire cast was warm and engaging. The locale is a place I must visit now, JShalvis's description that inviting. And since I'm now invested in everyone in Sunrise Cove, I'll be going back to read the earlier books. I guess it's not so bad to have started at the end. ;)...more

It was gritty in the ways I expect from an MC themed story and it grabbed me by the throat and pulled me in from page 1.
Gwen and her twin, Uther, grew up with Landon, doing all the things kids do. Yes, they were children of members of an MC, but they went to school together, rode bikes together, played together. There was always something special between Gwen and Landon. Until her mother took her away in the middle of the night without explanation. Gwen never saw her father again. Now Gwen's back. Having lost her mom, she know learns she's lost her dad, too, and her brother and Landon are now King and Clutch, President and Vice President of the Iron Outlaws.
Clutch doesn't want all the feelings that come racing back to the forefront with Gwen's return. But once details are out in the open, he realizes Gwen might be back to stay and more importantly, she's in danger. Naturally he goes all out to win the heart of the girl he's loved since he was a kid as well as doing all in his power to neutralize the threat to her.
While the romance between Gwen and Clutch moved a little quickly in certain phases, I enjoyed watching them get to know one another again. And their chemistry was explosive. I also appreciated getting to meet the brothers of the MC and see the camaraderie and dynamics between members of MC clubs and their families. The mystery and suspense element was also riveting. Honestly, I didn't guess everything that ended up being behind the trouble following Gwen and King.
I look forward to continuing the series now that I know the club and its members. And since this danger seems extinguished, I'm eager to see what else will befall this chapter of the Iron Outlaws....more

*****
I can't believe Maame is a debut novel nor that I waited so long to read it. Maddie's story is told with charm and wit, warmth and compassion. It was enlightening to walk in someone else's shoes as they go through daily life enduring the high expectations of family, the weight of responsibility for family, as well as racism, and sexism. My heart broke for Maddie at times, but I was also able to laugh along with her. JGeorge is an author to watch!
Maddie Wright, a Londoner by way of Ghana, has spent a large portion of her life caring for others. Being the responsible one in her family. The very definition of the name Maame, in her parents's native Twi. She was forced by circumstance to grow up too fast. Now, at age 25, she finds herself with the opportunity to start living, really living, her life. To figure out who she is, what she wants to do, and who she wants to do it with. But she encounters quite a few obstacles along her path of self discovery. I adored Maddie and sympathized with her. When she's given the chance to find the path to the life she's been dreaming of, she realizes she doesn't know herself all that well. Dealing with elements such has her family's culture, her religion, mental health, and simply looking different from most of her peers, all combine to slow her down on this journey.
Maame was an engaging read. It was illuminating to be in Maddie's head as she dealt with and explained her differences and/or lack of knowledge and experience in certain areas. For instance, she hesitates in accepting a date because she was going to wash her hair...for Maddie, hair washing IS an all-day event. And then there was the Google-ing of interpersonal situations that she'd not experienced such as the appropriate number of dates before having sex OR is my boss stealing my ideas? And her reaction to the responses? I laughed out loud many times. I admired Maddie for putting herself out there at work, wanting to prove her worth. And I appreciated how JGeorge conveyed the pressures of life - family, work, friends - complicated by the hardships of mental health and finances. She did it in a way that aptly described the sometimes happy, sometimes sad, and mostly messy path to finding your place in the world.
Maame was such a great read! I'm quite impressed with JGeorge's writing and, as a debut, Maame was fantastic. Engaging, thought-provoking, and emotional. I look forward to reading more from JGeorge in the future....more

There were times my adrenaline was pumping. I may have even shed a tear or two. But I felt content with the culmination Kali and Tiamat's story. Well done, Ms. Nevins!
***** Angel of Ashes & Dust is the exciting ending to the Wormwood Trilogy. It's a book I've been eagerly anticipating and it delivered the satisfying ending I was hoping for.
Picking up where Angel of Shadow left off, Kali finds herself the reluctant leader of the surviving humans. She's struggling with a role she didn't ask for, a group that seemingly gets angrier and more mistrusting every day, and a power she hesitates to use for fear of it being used against her. Despite Kali not wanting to lead, she's willing to do all she can to help these humans rebuild. This determination means she must deal with the distrust and make the hard decisions needed to further their cause. Decisions that often create more distrust. She must also explore her power - bestowed by her demon father - and learn to wield on the side of good.
Tiamat is leading the remaining Nephilim. His group is tenaciously working to aid the humans in rebuilding the world. Tiamat is also set on building a life with Kali. He's willing to work towards this future cooperatively to see what they can accomplish. Of course, their path isn't without its obstacles.
Richard - the demon Iziel - is avidly thwarting every move. He seems to be one step ahead in any plan and is constantly tricking Kali into making agreements that only serve him. Richard is an entertaining and complex character. He kept me wondering whether there was more than met the eye with him.
The supporting cast - human and Nephilim - were so integral to the story. It was necessary to learn about these people in order to cheer on Kali and Tiamat in their quest to help rebuild the world. I especially enjoyed Kali's relationship with Bram, which often provided that much needed giggle. I also liked the banter between Jacob and Jose, Kathleen's expression of emotions towards Kali, and the development of the friendship between Nathaniel and Brandee (a character named for me).
The action sequences were all very well done. You could feel the sizzle of power and taste the dust left behind. They kept my adrenaline pumping and had me puzzling out things with the clues left. I did feel that at times Kali's decision making had the pacing a little off but that didn't affect my enjoyment.
The climax was awesome. I really had no idea if this final plan of Kali's would work and wondered if the possible consequences would be worth it. I applaud DHNevins for how it all played out - even if it might not have been what I was hoping for.
This ride I've taken with Kali and Tiamat has been quite thrilling. I'm so pleased DHNevins picked up her pen and continued the story. There was a time I was wondering and reached out to her wanting to make sure she did. I appreciate the strong characters and the growth they exhibited over the course of the trilogy. And the world building was brilliant. I could envision the devastation of the planet as well as of its surviving inhabitants. I also felt the determination - that indomitable spirit - the people had to begin again...and to hopefully do better with their second chance. Angel of Ashes & Dust proved, "One end is another's beginning."...more

I've been meaning to read Catherine Bybee since meeting her in 2013 (yeah, I'm a bit s-l-o-w) and getting to be in on a new series from the ground level was really appealing. Luca and Brooke were a charming way to meet all the D'Angelos and this series.
Brooke was so...REAL! Needing a change following a breakup as well as having to take over primary care of her ailing father, she finds herself relocating to San Diego. Things seem to fall into place when she finds a facility for her father conveniently located and new digs in the area that drew her to San Diego in the first place. As a marketing guru, she works from home which allows her the flexibility to take care of her dad. We gain a deep understanding of her character as we see the way she cares for her dad (who essentially abandoned her), how close she is with her best friend, and her tight relationship with her co-workers. She's genuine, compassionate, and loyal...someone you want to be friends with.
Luca was equally as genuine. He's kind, hard-working, loyal. Being Italian and working in the family restaurant only added to his appeal. Add in the face he's a single dad and I could easily understand Brooke falling for him. The way he was with Franny melted my heart. His having a meddling mother helped move things along and I couldn't help but smile at her antics.
I delighted in the fact these two characters were a little older and had lived some life. Their relationship happened organically and I appreciated how they dealt with real life situations. And I appreciated the romance - finding real love after having only experienced a pale imitation. CBybee wove in family dynamics and issues, elder-parent care, blending a family, and work details with aplomb. It all combined to make the story that much more realistic.
With the exception of the plot device used to cause tension being a bit predictable, When It Falls Apart was a lovely read. I look forward to continuing the D'Angelos series with Chloe's story. I'm also eager to dive into some of CBybee's backlist which I've procured over the years. ;)

I'd not read any of the previous books in this series and didn't suffer for it. I will, however, be reading them all because I need to know all their stories. :)
This installment revolves around Addison and Ryan. I enjoyed watching Addison and the Intelligence Unit work to keep Ryan's sister, Chloe, safe. It was like putting together a puzzle but having to hunt down all the pieces to do so. Getting to know Addison's team members was fun and has me determined to get better acquainted. I don't read much of this genre - a mashup of a police procedural and romantic suspense - and I enjoyed the investigation element. Each stage felt realistic and I liked getting to see how the team worked together. The addition of the romance blossoming between Addison and Ryan only enhanced my reading pleasure. Addison was set on not getting involved with Ryan but the two of them couldn't fight the pull. The development of their relationship felt very genuine.
My introduction to KKincaid was addicting. I can't wait to read more!

And to say I'll be impatiently awaiting the next installment might just be the understatement of 2021 so far. (as it relates to my reading anyway ;))
Layla wants to be enough. As the daughter of a crime lord, she feels tainted by her family's business. Then there's the guilt she feels over a family betrayal that shouldn't be held against her, yet is. And she's paid the unthinkable price. Her family despises her and she's seeking vengeance as well as redemption.
Matthew is rather an enigma. He holds his cards close to his chest - except for his feelings for Layla. His life experiences have shown him no mercy so he knows what a gift Layla is. From the moment he sets eyes on her he's determined to make her believe in herself.
Their romance seems destined for trouble from the beginning seeing as Layla doesn't want to trust Matthew with details about herself, her family, or her heart. Matthew also is reluctant to be transparent. But they seem to know the important things about each other. Is it enough? Matthew seems hell-bent on being seems as who he see himself being - trustworthy, loyal, and loving. Layla wants to believe in him but she fears making yet another mistake that her family would make atone for.
Seeking Vengeance was deftly executed, drawing me in, ensuring I was invested in the characters, their lives, and their relationship dynamics. The mafia element was subtle until it wasn't but it was well done. And ESummers threw so many curve balls at me I was gasping and flipping through the pages as quickly as I could.
That ending was also unexpected and definitely jaw-dropping. I hope I don't have to wait too long for the next installment. Seriously. However, I know ESummers will make it worth the wait....more
